Some kinda mushroom... (Cubensis cake/poor mans terrarium)

Yeah, I watched the whole hour too those guys are dip-shits. They show one form of growing mushrooms because it is the "preferred" method. So obviously the Japanese know nothing about mushrooms in their thousands of years of producing them on logs and sawdust substrate.

For that matter they really are paying more attention to clean-room procedures than they are growing mushrooms. (Mushrooms grow in the wild on logs in the ground and even on cow shit I often times find that wild mushrooms are stronger due to the competition they must endure with outside contaminants.)

Am I the only one who doesn't see the huge inconsistency here?

Even food grade mushroom farms don't have the cleanliness they want us to follow. Utter bullshit.

I agree. but even with the marijuana growing Ur gonna want to do some maintenance to an extent, you know, so no cross contamination, or mites, infestations and stuff...maybe not to the measures as they're doing, with the boxes with holes cut out and gloves mounted to it and all that bleach spraying, and needle sanitizing..but I bet its in the top 10 important things you need to do while growing shrooms..
I couldnt do it, Im disgusted by all fungus, Id never intentionally grow any in my house...

few questions:

are U growing these in the same grow room as the marijuana?
how long does it take from spore till harvest?
do you need any special grow lights for this?
did U use that pressure pot thing they were talking about(Im assuming not bcuz ur not using rice)?

edit:why does this site keep substituting "M.J." for marijuana?

M.J. = Mary Jane

Yes its the same room (Temperatures match up beautifully) they were meant to grow together ;).

Innoculation(spore) to harvest takes about a month. Mine might be ready before then because it is a flat cake utilizing more width than height and maximizing surface area.

they need dim light for about 3 hours a day to fruit use a low wattage daylight cfl and you'll be fine.

And no I didn't pressure cook anything I sterilized using active oxygen and food service sanitizer.

The two-liter has a mat about half an inch thick under the top layer of substrate i can see it from the side and I will post a picture of it later when I get more top formation.

Heres the square cake in the mean:

The square cake looks as though it may be 50% colonized. I can probably start fruiting it in another week or so provided all goes well. -fingers crossed-

Gooooo Cubensis!

Dude, with all the problems I've seen growing shrooms, you have got to be the luckiest son of a bitch I've ever seen! Keep it up.
Peace

Eh, Don't jynx it.

I have a feeling it may have a lot to do with my choice in substrate and or lack of complete sterilization (i poured the corn in directly from the bag as with the soil chex mix and coffee grounds.)

The only downside to this that I have seen so far is the water table I created takes on coffee and corn juice and smells like urine almost. overall it smells like a compost heap -shrug-

both of my cultures are going swimmingly the two liter bottle has an inch or more of mycelium. Strange thing it doesnt stink it smells oddly sweet.

The tubberware is at least 80% colonized and I am making my fruiting chamber either tonight or tomorrow. Upon full colonization i will be dunking the cake for 18-24 hours in water in the fridge from there it will take about a week for pinning

The cake was kept at 82* constant last night and over the course of 12 hours a thick line of mycelium snaked its way across the last section of uncolonized substrate. Only a matter of days now.

Estimated completion 85-90%

I also just started a few rye grain cakes with a Brazilian strain. I was super worried about contamination so I did everything by the book. Using sterile technique is the way to go. Nobody wants to eat bad mushrooms that will put you in a coma or worse cause death! Better safe then sorry.

you tell them video man they don't no shit. and yes the mushrooms you see in my avatar i grew them so if you want sum help hit me and i can lead you in the right way of doing things. contamination is a biggggggg thing it is so hard to grow mushrooms if you don't no shit. don't give light till your mycelium is growing all the way. then you need to cast it. and as for the temp you need to keep it at a constant 82 for optimal growth. then when fruiting it needs to be at around 72 no higher than 76 or things will not grow right. go to shroomtalk.com that will help you way out with any Q&A you may have late

Is there any other sterilization technique or is the pressure cooker the only way? Could I not put a jar of substrate on a stone in a pot partially filled with water and put a lid on for a while?

I know far more about procedure than I need to. Contaminants are easy to spot let alone smell. I know what the cake should look like. My room is plenty more sterilized than a rotting log or a pile of shit. This experiment is to see whether or not I care to follow them. If there is a suspect contaminant I will also be getting opinions on it.

I am also on shroomtalk :)

Chemical should work fine if you don't have a PC like me. I used oxy and lysol.

Lol my cake fell apart... I'm in the process of trying to save it by molding it into a mound and casing it with perlite (yes i know its not the right casing material but i have no verm)

Ah well the two litre is still chugging away. We'll just have to wait and see if this "mound" yields anything.
