hey guys, i am planting at a site where clay is all around. i do not know if clay drains well or not...so i have a few questions. help greatly appreciated.

1. what is a cheap soil from stores that will work when replacing clay?

2. does clay drain well, or will there be a buildup of water in between my added soil and the clay (2-3 feet down)?

3. should i add anything for water retention to my soil because my location is on a hill? or will the clay help holding water?

1. Go to ANY nursery and they will help you out. I don't know about cheap, but I would go for something organic.
2. Clay does not drain well at all, it retains moisture. Get rid of clay.
3. Also available at the nursery are hydrating beads. They're great. They are beads that look like rock salt but when you add water they swell and retain moisture. Just mix them well in the soil before you put in the ground.

1: any soil is better than clay; i likewise, would suggest something organic with no added fertilizer
2: clay drains like concrete, but if you are replacing the soil 2-3 ft down as you say, then i dont think you will have a problem
3: the clay will help to hold moisture down in the bottom, but as the other person suggested, buy some polymer crystals, they absorb like 200x their weight in water, and work some into your soil.

Go with something organic, and dig down atlesat 3ft, and 3 ft wide, and fill it the soil. You should be fine
