I have not tried Hydro, but this is my opinion. I think I can get very good yield and high quality results using soil (Not really soil as most potting mixes contain no actual soil). IMO the advantage of potting mixes are the buffer it gives for water and nutes. I am trying to achieve a reasonable constant supply for my wife and my own consumption. I really think it depends on what you want to get out of it.

I will definitely try experimenting with some hydro in the future but I really think that potting mixes will be my overall choice in the long run.

Good thread gwaziman, I am looking forward to reading more opinions on the subject.

Happy growing to all, Hydro or not!!!:hump:

i've gone from my first grow in soil to my third grow being in coco and now my 5th grow will be in DWC (deep water culture)

it's got nothing todo with yeild and quality, for me the changes are all absed on convenience. i have a full time job and a flatmate who knows no better, so stealth and soil, and now coco, are really just not easy, neither is the watering each morning, so i'm opting for hydro where my only waste to get rid of is water (and the plant amtter of course) and i only need to feed/change the res once a week effectively.

i still had good results using soil and coco though. but hydro looks like it'll work best with my lifestyle, i'll have to see in a months time.

oh, and hydro is a cool principal, much more exciting than boring soiilll :P haha

i started in soil.. switched to hydro.. and will never go back to soil...

1) its much easier to be stealthy with hydro... in that it is much easier to dump nute water out than it is to dump buckets full of dirt out.... you dont have to carry bags and bags of dirt into your home.. and hydro is much less messy...

2) results are much quicker and plants seem more lush with hydro... mainly because of the insane amount of nutes and water available to them all the time... veg time is much faster at least.. flowering is the same.. maybe slightly faster...

3) i personally think hydro is easier to maintain.. it can be a little more tricky to get set up and running perfectly... but once you have things running right then its growing on cruise control.. watching ph and ec/ppm is easy and much easier to fix in hydro than in soil...

4) if your plants do have problems... like defs for instance.. they show faster.. so you have to be on top of things a little more than soil.. but also, they get fixed much faster..

really it comes down to the grower and their preference.. nothing wrong with soil.. nothing wrong with hydro/aero... its just a matter of what you as a grower like to use and find the best results for you using....
