As posted in another site, thought I'd share it here:

I also have TFD's O. Haze growing outdoors. It started flowering strongly about 2 weeks ago. It too has been given a high N food since germination. A strong flowering response is induced by phytochrome increases in your typical mutts you folks are buying from the pollen chuckers. Pure sativa, i.e. O. Haze, is induced to flower via chronological age. (last photo) I doubt if I'll get much bulk out of the Haze before a freeze hits them. Decided to plant the seeds since they've been sitting around for about 10 years.

Shown are Peak19 backcrosses (and one Haze) I did about 10 years ago. Again, these are outside. 4 cola training on Haze and Peak19. Strange but I don't remember the pistils on Peak19 being so short. Anyhoo, they are bulking up very nicely. I've had to hit all plants with UAN (33-0-0) to keep the leaves green and healthy. Note how strong the flowering response is in spite of the high N, low P treatment? They have been fed with a slow release 18-5-9 with micros, since March. So much for the hype and bloom food paradigms found in all cannabis forums, most of the hype parroted by noobs that feel more comfortable reading labels and posts and not their plants.

Plants are 5' - 6' tall, 2' - 3' wide.

White background is from me holding up a sign with one hand while shooting with the other.

One of the Haze plants -

HazeGroupOct2012.jpg

This is your typical pure sativa profile - extremely narrow leaves, light green leaf color, airy as hell, very little trichomes seen via the naked eye upon harvest, tall and lanky. Not for the faint of heart. :-?

hes trying to prove you dont need all those snake oils out there.. examples (snowstorm, gravity, bud blood, big bud, etc)
and the high P-k values arent required for flowering like the labels on those bottles would have you believe.

Bottom line: they want your money, they dont give two fucks about your plants.

That's a fucking shame. Could have been the first 10 pound plant. lol.
I know. I'm just waiting for Snoop Dogg to pick up the story and go asking them for tips...even Uncle Ben's impressive plants might have been outdone by these golden oldies' natural green fingers.

So many people get seduced fancy labels and marketing. Nutrient companies have created mini cults where their fancy labels substitute for idols and the slick marketing slogans are the gospel. It's similar to the cult like following that people like Michelle Bauchman and Sarah Palin have. It doesn't matter how ridiculous anything they say is, or that nothing is backed up by facts. People believe that nonsense just like people believe they need to spend 20 dollars a liter for 25 cents worth of watered down monopotassium phosphate and magnesium sulphate. No matter what facts you put in front of them they refuse to believe them.

Exactly. I presented what I've been preaching for years.

I am a newbie with low funds when I told my husband I was getting a new hobby he said you have a budget. I have invested most of it in HPS lights and fairly good soil. I read about MG being bad so I did not use that, I got a decent fert at home depot and use that. I ordered a loupe and other stuff but when I read things here I sometimes freak out that I need so much more than someone said to KISS and I felt better. I am going to upgrade the soil for the clones I am putting into veg and get a PH meter for next round. I use RO water and fert every week but not the full dose and I am doing ok so thank you for this post. I feel better.

I'll give you a bit of free advise:

1. Unlearn everything someone told you in a cannabis forum,

2. MG soil is excellent, see #1,

3. What's with the pH meter and RO? See #1,

4. If you can grow a tomato well, then you can grow cannabis. Give it the same treatment and that includes avoiding "cannabis specific" products. I have come to the conclusion that they do more harm than good. A lot of that blame rests squarely on the shoulders of noobs,

5. If you're determined to forgo a good book on indoor plant culture and a good general gardening forum, thinking your best info can be found here, then buy Mel Frank's 'MJ Insiders Growers Guide'. It will be your shortcut to success,

6. The light biz is another racket. Some of my best indoor gardens have been via using HPS exclusively from start to finish. There is plenty of the blue spectrum in HPS lighting to provide excellent growth. Come to think of it, my avatar plant was grown with pure HPS and the main cola was at least 5" across and rock hard solid.

Good luck,
Uncle Ben

Nice plants, seen many pure sativas' like that as a youth, your absolutely right most bloom boosters marginally help, cost way more than they should, and has more marketing behind the product than horticulture research; but this can be extended to just about everything we (read humans) use for commerce.

Take a look at our surroundings, we like to pay for snake oils, it what makes our economy GO! Everything can be considered a racket, it's all in the eyes of the beholder.

I don't pay for snake oils although I have experimented with them and found them useless and that includes the popular ones like molasses. Learning what makes a plant tick and plant nutrition is a science that can't be learned while punching buttons on a remote.
