yes use the mh bulb to veg your plants and the hps to flower. the mh will look more blue when on and is a different shape than the hps, hps is more orange when on.

Are your growing it a room or box or tent? It makes a difference. :leaf:

If you're only question is about the lighting/bulb type what Rob said is accurate. People could probably be more helpful if that is the product you want if you gave more details about your set up, including size and such. In the right circumstances your link is a decent value.

That looks like a good unit and decent price. You will want the MH bulb also for veg OR you can veg with your CFLs and then flower with your HPS to save some money on power.

My room is a 4x4x4 box painted white in side...I'll get pictures of it real quick...I need to get a pic up of my seedling too... The leaves look great but the one part looks like it was burnt or something when popping out of the soil....



Edit: I just went down and checked on them I have 12 plants and everyone of them are busting through the soil with only 6 Cfl's (everyone said it couldn't be done) But will it be ok to switch them over mh? I honestly didnt think these would even grow with only 6 cfl's

Seedlings don't need much to pop and grow for awhile. Switching to MH should be fine, just keep the temps in check and light off them far enough.

I am planning on ordering one also and am new. Used cfls on 1st grow and half of second. Now 1st week of 12/12. cfls at 20,000 lumins. Plants are beautiful but want potent bud. The only thing I noticed about link is there is no fan and all the ones I've looked at had fans. Think about cooling, maybe an Air Cooled Hood & Carbon Filter. :bigjoint:

Sorry man, wasn't my intention to sound like that. I assumed that since you were growing with CFLs that you should already know what HID lights are all about and at least understand the difference between a MH and a HPS and know what each is used for. You should have provided more details in your question if you plan on being picky with the replies you get.

Jeeeeesus, people are sooooo sensitive these days....

Seriously though, you will learn a lot more if you research the basics on your own first.

That's not a bad deal really. This one is decent too, I like the reflector / tube style of it. Comes with both bulbs and hangers & a timer.

agree with this, with out some sort of cool shade your going to struggle with temps, by the time you allow a foot for the light and say another foot for the pot you've only got 2 foot for the plant, save your self a headache and buy a air cooled hood. the one thats linked above has everything you need, apart from the fan.

Two things right off the bat for you to consider, height and heat and heat is a killer. With the box you plan on using with that four hundred, your plants won't live is my guess, heat will kill them and between the depth of your hood and the distance you will need to keep your light from your plants not to mention the height of your containers, that leaves you about two foot of growing room. In your situation I would not even consider a hood that wasn't air cooled and a decent fan not some piece of crap. The more you can afford to spend on equipment today, the less you'll be upgrading later once you see the results of using hid lighting. Another thing, I use six hundreds but even then, I only use hps. I do all my vegging in a tent using a t-5 HO four tube four foot fixture, saves on electric and does a fine job of vegging with a tenth of the cost.

Getting the HPS/MH set up but read that UV lights increase potency of the bud. So what kind and how many watts of UV do I need?

Well I am upgrading the box to be 6ft tall... I have a regular size box fan in there now and have to even keep a heater going in the box to reach 75 deg. So if I don't close it up I think I can stay around those temps.
