Technically speaking, I flush daily. Using coco I feed daily with an ample runoff. During the last two weeks I reduce my nutrient solution to 1/8 teaspoon per gallon. Since I'm basically using a hand-watered drain-to-waste hydroponics system, I'm reluctant to ever totally starve them, since there's nothing at all in my medium.
I don't know about ash tests, but my weed yellows up prior to harvest except for the little bud leaves that stay green and frosty. The shade leaves all yellow and fall off or I snap them off. And it tastes very good to me.
