Smell Question.

Im on my 1st grow. I do not have a carbon filter and i was wondering, how bad the smell really is. People say smell control is a big issue but i kinda think they are exaggerating. So honestly how strong is the smell really?

Depends on tons of stuff. BUT, I would say it is pretty strong in that yes, people near by can tell. I highly recommend carbon filter!

Yes. Especially for around 30 minutes before lights-on and lights-off periods and 30 minutes after. The smell is strong, you'll get used to it, and not tell. It'll permeate clothing and other materials around the grow. Ona bucket, sealed grow, and carbon filter on the exhaust are your best options, but, still risky in an apartment.

Depands on amounts and quality ... but yes, the smell is a dead giveaway and be carried in the wind for miles.

There have been drone choppers here with the technology to "smell" your grow, these get used to find large and semi large grows outdoor.
combined with infrared, they are also able to track down indoor grows. (up to a certain degree, size matters)

Just incase you are still not sure......
It Can be overwhelming depending on strain. A lot has to do with weather or not you wish to have a second grow.

I'm not even a month into my grow with my auto's and they're already starting to have a little smell.
There's some DIY tutorials online for carbon filters and they're fairly cheap for all the materials needed. It's worth looking into. :)

Well i have a 400 watt hps and 3 plants. The Strain is a cross called Critical Jam and the genetics are White Widow x Skunk x Bigbud x Jamaican Me Crazy. Do you guys think they would have a strong smell based on genetics?

My carbon filter gets rid of the smell from my tent. but i find after working in there people can smell it on my clothes, so you still need to be careful

There is an easy/inexpensive fix-- it is called Ona Gel...
It comes in plastic jars and all you do is put one in the bottom of a plastic bucket with a small low-powered fan laying on top of the bucket (so it is sucking the air out of the bucket and blowing it into the room)

It covers the smell without effecting the plants-- you can get it at any grow-shop and Some Lowe's / Home Depot stores have it.
Makes it smell like you are doing laundry or the dishes etc....

I bought a can 9000 which cost me $70.00 (at my local hydro shop) for my small cfl grow because the smell just got fucking insane. I could smell it a little bit but I'm always at home so I got used to it. When people came over they were like wtf are you doing in here because of the smell. This all depends on a couple different factors but I think it's better to be safe than sorry. And you'll wind up needing a carbon filter eventually for a smelly ass grow.

To me the ONA is overpowering. May mask the weed but not what you want to smell through your apartment. You will want a carbon filter and you will regret it if you don't get one. Worst of all, if the smell gets out of control and you have to order one on-line, you may be in a bad place waiting for it to arrive. I only grow 3-4 plants at a time. I needed the filter!

What about burning incense for Witchcraft? I have some very strong Frankincense incense for Witchcraft.

Take it from someone who had three bagseed plants with not so skunky genetics. I tried to avoid the inline fan and carbon filter. I tried ONA. I tried clsoing vents, I tried the air freshners that go in the vents. Yet still as soon as my wife got into the hallway (durng those peak odor times of day) that leads to my office where my tent is, the odor was there. It would also carry through my central heat system imnto other rooms until I closed up the intake. So now I have a gallon of ONA that I use as a paper weight and spent the money on the right equipment anyway.
