I would like to use a 50amp 220volt oven circuit to run some lamps on... the oven is near the stairs to the basement and ive seen many choices for 50amp 220v extension cords..W

what i am looking for is something that converts the 50amp plug into a strip of regular 3 prong outlets so i can plug the ballasts into it.

what is what im looking for called?

Identify the NEMA configuration of the 50 amp oven receptacle and tell us if it is a 6-50R, or is it a 10-50R, or is it a 14-50R. Bear in mind that only the 14-50R receptacle can be used to supply both 240 volts and 120 volts to your grow room. You are restricted to using only 240 volts for your ballasts if your oven receptacle is a 6-50R or 10-50R. You need some kind of overcurrent protection for the outlets in your grow room that will be powering your ballasts. That's why serious growers install a sub panel with circuit breakers sized for each branch circuit. Otherwise you will need to replace your 50 amp breaker to a size more suitable for protection. Perhaps the simplest solution would be to install a lighting controller for 240 volts and replace the 50 amp double pole circuit beaker with a 20 amp double pole circuit breaker. Oh by the way, this is all assuming that you live in the United States.

my balasts are switchable to 240v so that isnt a big deal...
so take a 50amp extension cord into the basement and put a sub panel with individual breakers? thanks..

Your "Extension Cord" you need is the same type they have used for years on construction jobs...
Maybe, go to "slow" [it's the economy stupid] construction company and see if you can buy one for the back door cash price....
Your cord [6/4] will need to be four conductors [Black-110 hot/Red-110 hot/ white nutral-/Green ground
Size for 50 amp cord? What will be your connected load?
4 or 6 AWG 4 conductor.... That cord maybe available on e-bay.... +$200-400

Me... I'd hard wire the cord in, not looking for a 50 amp cord to come un plugged....
Good Luck!
