Hey yo

What are some of the options for a substrate mix for shrooms, i couldn't find brown rice flour so i got brown rice instead....as i write this i am now thinking that i'm a bit of an idiot cause this isn't going to work right?

Well if brown rice alone doesn't work what are my other options for a mean substrate thats not brown rice flour and Vermiculite?

Any help is good

Peace

I hate cakes... try to get popcorn or whole corn..... works like a charm. Presure cook for 40 minutes in water, dry, jar and presure cook for 65 minutes.

lol, dont give up man, anything home made i make fails miserably!

assuming ur from austrailia cos of the vegemite thing, why not pop to a seriously cheap supermarket and buy a crap jam. throw it away but use the jar.

why dont you blend the brown rice into brown rice flour and then boil then jars in a regular pot with a steam basket? dont go buying new substrate when you already have it

Thanks guys :D

AK, your a genius! blender, dont have one. I'll get a magic bullet :D i can see the add's now
"With the new Majic bullet you can blend up a mean substrate to grow some beautiful cilicide cubensies!"
"thats right Tina, i ate some 10 minuets ago and i can see the rainbows coming right off your toung!"

So what i did (don't laugh) got the jar, emptied it, slammed it in the dishwasher, got it out, rinsed with boiling water then put the brown rice in and added boiling water as well, let it sit for like 10 seconds, drained the water, put the lid on and i'm about to ad the mushie.

I don't think it will work but honestly i'm not fussed
Big thanks for the blender tip
+rep to you both!

Don't try to experiment too much with sterilization techniques. Its best to hot bath your jars for an hour at least if you don't have a pressure cooker. Some of the bad micro organisms are pretty tough.

The problem with regular cooking is that it simply doesn't kill heat resistant bacteria.

I beg to differ...This is as cheap, simple, etc. as you can get and works fine if you take the necessary precautions. You can always throw the jars and Vermiculite in the oven before hand to get ahead of the game. You dont need to buy a bunch of unecessary expensive equipment(PC's, filtered lids), unless you grow bulk.

i used the shroomery site for guidance. I found the people there very helpful. the range of substrates is vast. it really comes down to your set up and what works for you and is available. Good luck Walk On!~ :hump:

A cheap and effective "clean area,"would be to turn oven onto 300 F,let warm with door closed, then open up when at temp, then pull oven racks and put all equipment on the racks to shoot ur jars and the like. The warm/hot air coming from the oven will have an updraft to keep all contaminants and mold out of ur jars, hope this helps bro, peace:peace:
