Shoulder injury... Is it enough? Am I eligible for a card in Colorado Springs, CO?

Hi everyone. This is my first post. I am a total newbee with some questions, searching for advice. I am a middle-aged man with a mini-van!

Background:
I live in Colorado Springs, CO. I haven't tried marijuana in 15 years, so I am nut a user and I don't even know any users. I am naive, but learning alot from you guys recently.

I injured my left shoulder socket in an offroad motorcycle wreck last year; went to the doctor after 6 months of reoccurring pain spells. The doc prescribed physical therapy. I didn't have time to go, so I never followed up with him again, but it is on record as a painful injury that persisted longer than 6 months. Now, it has been a year and I still get pain spells from it. usually a week or two at a time. I really have to baby my arm and be careful how I sleep on it.

If I follow up on it, the doc will want me to do physical therapy and probably get x-rays. I don't want a cortizone shot or surgery and I cant spare the time and money right now to fix my shoulder, so I just deal with the painful spells.

Here's my question:
Would a Cannibis Specialist have enough grounds to recommend me for a card at this point, even though I didn't do my physical therapy? Is one doctors visit 6 months after the accident conclusive enough to say I have chronic pain? Is it necessary that I pay for another doctor visit, even though I have no intentions of getting xrays or doing physical therapy right now, Just to have the additional info on doctors records at the 1 year mark? Must I have two doctor's visits, or do you think I am good to go already.

Please advise. I respect the opinions of this forum.

Hello auminer49r and welcome to RIU!
I'm going to guess that you will have to see another doctor.
Did your doctor prescribe any medicines to you, have you or are you taking anything now for the pain?

!

Thanks for the quick response.

No, the doctor did not prescribe any meds. I just take over the counter Ibuprofen when it flares up too bad.

By another doctor, you mean not to the same doctor again and not to a cannibus specialist?

No problem.

Unless your present doctor supports medical marijuana for your needs, then yes, you will need to see another doctor that does.

*There's also Cannamed or the THC Foundation out here in Colorado.
They can let you know if you need more medical history to qualify.

Thanks again, I will make a couple of phone calls tomorrow and see how it goes.

I highly doubt my family doctor would recommend it. He's too conservative.

To get your card through the THC Foundation, the will most likely want to see a more current treatment history. They want a record of your condition, and need to see that it is current. I have a friend with a similar injury, they asked him to provide 3 examples of his medical reports. I *think* they want you to show them proof that your condition is still current every 3 years or so.

I am a patient & caregiver in Colorado Springs, when you get your card, contact me if you are having trouble locating quality medicine ;)

Thank you Lucydog.

Great advice.

I have decided to go to the PARC on a thursday and speak with someone there. If they tell me that I need to go to my regular doctor one more time and have my medical transcripts faxed to a cannibus consultant to verify that my pain is still there, I will do that. If that doesn't qualify me for a recommendation, I may give up on it and continue to tolerate the pain using over-the-counter pain relievers like I always do.

To be honest...because I have always known marijuana to be an illegal recreational drug, part of me feels like I would be trying to get away with doing something illegal...
But then I think to myself, I really do have an injury that gives me daily pain, and medical marijuana is legal, and I really am trying to use my rights for the purpose that the voters and the law intended. So, I need to get past that stigma and do what I need to do to find relief.

If that's not a good enough reason, then I guess I don't have a good enough reason and I will drop it and maybe try again down the road.

If I do get my card, I will track you down as a potential caregiver. I don't plan on growing my own. Thanks again Lucydog.

Welcome to RIU :hump:

I'm confident that you will get some good advice on here from fellow Colorado people. I wish you the best of luck and I can only hope my state goes MMJ because I have tons of medical documentation.

umm i dont think you understood it correctly
the thc-f just needs 3 chart NOTES from a doctor relevent to the injury. the chart notes cannot be over 3 years old.
mri, cat, xrays they will look at also if you have them
it is just a physicians "opininion" as to wether or not they feel cannibus could help or eleviate some of the symptoms.
chronic pain is a covered condition

hey i live in colorado as well and looked this stuff up for a leg injury that i had. All that you need is for the doctor to say that you suffer from CHRONIC or SEVER pain then you get those records transferred to a medical marijuana specialist and you are golden.

It should be no problem, just make sure you get the required 3 notes. (thanks for claifying that goodxxxgirl)

worst case scenerio, go to a doctor, get an exam, maybe x-rays. that should be enough?

I'm new here, but I just wanted to make a comment. Be careful with the OTC meds as they (especially Ibuprophin)( sp?) can do alot of harm to your GI tract. (I know this from personal experience!) You may already know this, and I am not trying to insult your intelligence, but so many ppl end up in the ER every year from undermedicated pain that causes them to over use and get hurt from seemingly benign OTC meds.
Oh, and good luck in the Springs, I'm here too and in a similar boat!

Thank you to all that replied.

I went to my doctor one last time and he checked my shoulder out again. Now I have an appointment to meet with a Cannibus Specialist Doctor in a couple of weeks.

So here's what I will have when I meet with the Cannibus Specialist soon:

1. A doctors transcript for a shoulder injury that was still giving me sharp pain 6 months after the incident. (7 months ago)
2. Another doctor's transcript 6 months later than doctor's visit #1 verifying the same pain. (2 weeks ago)

That's it. any comments? The doctor's visit with the cannibus specialist will cost me $$$ out of pocket whether I get a recommendation or not. I'm a little concerned that I only have the two transcripts, not three as mentioned in earlier posts.

Any scrpts for pain meds during that time and still continuing? Also was surgery involved, do you have a scar that would show that there was surgery?
Those would help as well.

You are the one who says how much pain there is , and if you get relief from cannabis , or not. YOU tell the Dr. " I want a MM card. Can you do it ,yes or no???

Good luck an let us know the outcome. Colorado Seems to have a much higher threshold to qualify than CA. And a much lower quantity of medicine you can grow or possess.

Pain seems to be one of those gray areas, nobody but you can really measure how much pain you have.

I had a Niece that died from a similar circumstance. She was taking large doses of Ibuprofen for an ongoing condition. When she went to the ER, they gave her more on top of that. I believe that it caused liver failure.

I guess my point is, yes you can get that stuff OTC, but be careful with it.

I have been thinking about moving to Colorado for some time now. I have ADHD but I go to college. Before I move there I would need to know that I can be approved for MMJ becuase of my ADHD. Also I would half to reside in an area that has a good college.

My question is this... Do I qualify for MMJ because of ADHD and can you provide a link to a page that can clearify any questions about the Colorado MMJ program.

Here is a link to the State website that should answer some questions for you. ADHD is not a covered condition in itself, but you may find a Dr that will recommend. Does it cause pain for you? Any Dr will need as a minimum about 3-4 visits that substantiate an approved condition.

This is adult ADHD and can be quiet difficult to manage. It does not cause physical pain but does mentally. If Colorado would not give me MMJ for this condition then what other states will?
