Should We Just Make Our Own Heat-Sinks Too? 2 Videos That Make Me Say YES!

Normally I wouldn't start a thread for something like this but I did want peeps to see these vids. Guy makes it look easier than all that math some of y'all do ;). Seriously though there's a lot of potential to save bank on DIY costs. Just need a cheap mold that has a nice flat bottom since I would think a little polishing will be involved and a weight acceptable to cool whatever COB one wants to cool.

See how he made a sword? You could make reflectors that way. Put those thieves at Ledil out of business ! LOL

Unfortunately Fran ,casted aluminium is more like a "sponge " ..
It is full of bubbles. (trapped atmospheric air ,Hydrogen and other gases ),thus having poor thermal exchange properties .
Casting melted aluminium ,is not the way to make heatsinks ...
Nevertheless ,those vids are pretty interesting ...

LEDs on the brain... couple months ago I found there was a thing called casting an ant hill. I thought to myself, I bet those would make great heat sinks. :)

Interesting.

Heatsinks are also of an aluminium alloy, I'm sure that comes into play for solidity, and probably thermal conductivity too.

How about making homemade reflectors ? You could try buying just 1 angelina and replicate :)
