Shoestring Grow - Flowering Cabinet

So this is my first grow as well and I've been learning lots thanks to watching things progress, doing a ton of reading, and of course the wizards here at RIU: you guys rock.

I thought I'd give something back...
I have to keep a pretty close eye on how much my 'hobby' costs me until my cashflow improves so I figure I'll share what's working so far. If it helps other like-minded growers, then great. If anyone has any suggestions or improvements, that's great too.

First and foremost, I live in a small community remote enough that a day trip to 'the city' to buy gear isn't an option. Given that it's a small (and pretty conservative) community, stealth is super-important. Ordering from online hydro shops isn't really an option for me either.

Everything I use has to be fairly generic so that I can find it at a garden store or a hardware store.

I have been vegging and cloning (and growing veggies) under a four-tube flourescent fixture and things are clipping along nicely. I've got 3 clones about 3 weeks into flower, another two to go in in a week or so, and another 9 (probably 7 by then) that'll go in 4 weeks after that.
Continuous harvest, baby!!

The cabinet I built is 3X3X6'high and has (so far) 10 CFLs @ 1600 lumens each and 2700K on a 12/12 cycle.

The 'foil' is actually space blankets from a local camping store (4 @ about 3 bucks each) stapled to a frame banged together from some scrap 2X2 laying around the shop. The lights were on sale for about 9 bucks for a six-pack and the lamp holders are less than 2 bucks each. The front curtain is held shut with velcro a la the 'Mr Green' videos.
Note the cardboard tabs that the staples run through: this stops the staples from pulling through the foil.

I haven't put it in yet, but a 50 CFM bathroom fan is the priciest part of the whole thing, but it was only 25 bucks.

Mine is in a dark corner so it's ok, but it's important to point out that space blankets aren't 100% lightproof. If it's an issue, then one layer stapled to the inside of the frame and one layer stapled to the outside of the frame will do the trick.

On to the pics !

The four lights mounted to the disc in the center are on a pulley and the table is raised at the moment. I don't see myself doing fullsize plants here but, with 6' of height, at least I've got the option.

And with the curtain closed:

The most important thing...this can be recreated anywhere cheaply and would lend itself to closets, lockers, cabinets, etc. Without the fan, the cost was less than 50 bucks and it's all stuff that's available without raising eyebrows in a small town. I'm continuously adding more light to it as well - another two bulbs today and then another row of lights further down to give me a double-decker setup....

And to think this all started with ONE bagseed of five that actually germinated (grow thread in my sig) Mum is about 15 weeks old, about 4 1/2' tall, and has given me 20-odd clones so far and is still going nuts with new growth.

I love this plant...

very nice it's just a shame that no one would respect your privacy enough to allow a 400 watter to be shipped to your house. other than that it all looks very nice. keep it up i'd be interested in seeing your perp grow.

Looks good man, like your setup! Plants look nice too.

Those blankets will be an issue when you get to flowering. Unless you are completely sure its 100% lightproof, you'll have issues. Just to check, I'd sit in the middle with the room at its darkest point, sit and let your eyes adjust to the light. See if there are any light leaks.

A way to fix that though, would be to buy some project board paper from your local grocery store. Its thick, doesn't look suspicious and will be much better for preventing light leaks. Cardboard will do the same if you can get some nice size pieces.

Other than that, excellent job man! Can't wait to see ur babies flowering. :)

Hey, thanks for the thoughts guys.

Smokey, it's not so much about allowing it to be shipped. I live in a small community where my mail pickup is at the post office and packages are picked up in person...a person whom I will know.
It helps with stealth but not with shipping that my house doesn't actually have a street address either.
Maybe I'm just being paranoid...but it beats the alternative.

I'll have to take the harvest into town to find it a new home once I have enough, so it'll be CFLs till then. A 400W HPS and ballast are on my list, just not until I can walk anonymously into a store, plunk my cash down and walk away with what I need. That's an option I just don't have here. I think I'm going to stick with 4' flouro grow lights for veg though, especially since I'm just going to do a short veg and then flower the clones to keep 'em small. I've got two clones that'll serve as additional mums, so I should be able to grow enough clones to harvest some every 4 weeks...

Your username - a Douglas Adams fan? Cool.
Well...since you asked. I took these this afternoon - remember I'm only 3 weeks in. I was sure happy to see the hairs and trichomes !
Any guesses on strain ?
I have no clue and no way to find out for sure, so it's all guessing...kinda like when you get a dog from the pound.
Still, I'm looking forward to seeing what the high is.

It's been a good run...

I'm growing enough for personal use, but my 'personal use' has gone up. I'm still using the same mylar setup for flowering and to the naysayers I say:

Thanks for the input, but

Bite Me

I keep adding more lights as I can and just added a fan because temps were climbing to about 80 at the end of a light cycle. It's 99% lightproof and being in a dark corner makes it just right.

I just built some more shelving with 4-tube flouro fixtures so I can take more clones. The first plant in the pick was about 5' tall when I harvested her and got a few ounces (after drying). Since then it's been clones (maybe 8" tall ?) to give me between 1/8 and 1/4 every two weeks.

The two mums that came from the first plant gave me a crapload of clones and I've just put one in to flower. Thanks to LST, it's pushing about 6 colas though they aren't the big beauties in many of the pics here because it's CFLs....it all goes into the bowl anyway !!

The new mums-to-be are growing up nicely, and the high actually seems to be getting better with each generation.

Thanks again to so many here for helping me with the first steps - hard to believe that this has all been from the one seed that germinated !
If I can suggest one thing - it's a plant that WANTS to grow: grow it under a freakin streetlight if you want, just grow it and learn. The more who learn to do this, the better. Despite their best efforts, they can't lock us ALL up !

And smoking your own weed rocks !

Peace
