SH Grow Journal

This grow journal is for everyone to add their wisdom to my first SH grow. I will be using the steps outlined by Roseman. 1 6 planter tub, several cfl lights, seeds are "Ice" and "Blackberry." Most likely will be a SOG but I'm considering setting one plant in a DWC bucket and doing a SCROG in a separate area. I'm using tap water that comes out of the spigot with a ph of 6.0. See pics below and feel free to jump in when necessary. Thanks!

This is the day 1 setup, about 3 days ago. Seeds are in the rockwool to germinate, water is at a ph of 6.0, everything has been cleaned, cups are covered with plates, and no lights are on. Temp in the room is about 68 degrees. I've added a portable space heater, as the temp is dropping down at night.

Day 2 finds the seeds germinated, all but 1. I've added another seed germinating on the sidelines, in case I get a dud.

3 are "Ice"

3 are "blackberry"

I've set the heater to give me a constant 78 degrees for now.

My seedlings are bumping into the bottom of the plates covering the net pots, so I've cut out a small hole in the center of 5 out of 6. I put one 85 watt CFL 6500K about 18 inches above the plants in a reflector. Light is on 24 hours. I've replaced my dud seed with my spare, and am waiting for it to sprout to remove the plate covering it.

what did you do for insect prevention?
ROSEMAN!!! Thanks for joining! I've used some commercial grade pest repellent all over the inside and outside of my grow location about 2 weeks ago. A week ago, I soaked everything inside "carpet, windows, doors, shelves, even curtains" with a slightly less toxic formula. As I am afraid of anything with more legs than me, I treat my home often and will continue my diligence in the grow house. Any suggestions as to how to continue to prevent the pests?

Congrats!!! IMHO( and it's only my opinion)is to wait until day 8 or 9(until you see the roots coming out of the nets)before giving them any nutes.

And then start off really slow, like no more than 1/4 strength.

Looks like you've done everything spot-on so far. Keep it up!!!

You have done your homework (studying and research) and done it well too.

I really appreciate your input. What would you recommend for a height?
Try around 8". Take the back of your hand and hold it under the light(just above the seedlings) and it should not be hot. Slightly(only slighly)warm is OK @ this stage.

Then watch them carefully for the 1st few hours, just to be sure you're not over heating them.

So, its been almost a week now since the seeds were put in to germinate, and all six seedlings are starting to look good. I've got a question that will probably stir up some debate. I'm wanting to do a sea of green, growing the plants short and harvesting quickly. I'm going to steal one plant and place it in a DWC bucket under a separate lighting and attempt a SCROG. For my remaining 5 plants, how long should I veg before switching to 12/12? Bluey....I gotta avoid those tall plants that you grow!!!

I'm trying to learn how to avoid growing tall plants too

I have no experience with SCROG or SOG, but many others do and I'm sure someone will give you their thoughts.

How high above the plants did you set your light at?

Good to hear that all 6 are looking good.

I'm probably around 8" right now. Its interesting to see the seedlings bending toward the one 85w CFL. I will be setting up an additional light probably on friday or saturday. Probably whenever I add in 1/4 nutes, which will be once i see 4 REAL leaves.

Temp in grow room : 75
Water Temp: 68
Ph : 5.75

Day 9 I add in nutrients. Some of the plants have roots into the water, and all have roots beneath the net pots. I took my pre-measured SH nutes out, weighed it on my digital scale, and added 1/4 pack of Micro, and a quarter pack of Grow. I drained a half gallon of water out of the tub using my drain plug, and mixed the nutrients until they were completely dissolved. I then added half of the nute water into the tank. Several hours later, I poured the rest of the nute water into the tank. I've also added in additional lights today. As I only had one 85 watt 6500k cfl bulb, i took 2 splitters and an extender and put 4 23 watt cfl's into the extra clamp light.

So, yesterday was the first nutes, and today I noticed new growth (leaves) sprouting from the center of the seedlings that was not there yesterday. However, I also noticed that all the leaves appear to be drooping? Or curling down? Wonder what causes that? Color appears to be slightly lighter green today.

Temp 78
Ph 6.0

It looks like they are stretching towards the light. You may want to increase the wattage from 23W to 42W.
Your temp & pH looks fine. I don't know what else to say.

Maybe someone else will see whats lacking???

I've checked them again this morning, and they appear slightly perkier. I think its just adjusting to the nutes. As for the 42w lamps, I'm a little worried about heat at this point. As the plant grows, more light will be needed, but at this point I think there are enough lumens for the small seedlings. I have another fixture to put in once the plants are more developed.
