Seeking advice on Germination

First time grower here. I put five Northern Lights on a plate using the paper towel method. I placed the plate in my cupboard. I checked it this morning and the paper towels were dry, only about 18 hrs after I started. I sprayed the towels moist again and placed it back in the cabinet. Question: if the seeds haven't broken through yet, will this hurt my chances on germination?

yes it could effect your chances of germination :( . no1 rule man dont let em dry out ! try wrapping your plate with cling foil after u mist the pappertowels , this will stop it from drying out for a good 5 days atleast.

You should be checking them regularly anyway, as you do not want too much of the taproot exposed before planting. You could avoid this by planting seeds straight into your preferred growing medium.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I put the seeds in a tupperware dish and placed a lid on it, but let the seal open for a little air flow. I hope it works. I guess I will know in a few days.

You skipped an important step. Put the plate with the wet paper towels into a large sealable plastic bag and seal the bag closed. If the paper towels have been properly moistened to start you will not need to add any more water. Check after 3 days and every day after to see if the seeds are germinating.

HINT -- When you are sealing the baggie leave a small corner open enough to exhale a large breath into the bag. Immediately close the bag. Plants take carbon dioxide and produce oxygen.

Good luck, BigSteve.

Here is my method and I have a very good succes rate.
I drop my beans in a shot glass of water and let them soak for 24hrs.
I then put the seeds into a sunleaves starter plug in a tray on a heat mat and make sure it stays moist.

Thats it, thats all I do, and Ive only ever had one unknown bagseed not sprout. All the beans need until they sprout is moisture and warmth.

lol u guys and ur "burping" ur baggs. ur roots, that if they ever grow couldnt use that much CO2 anyhow. just put ur damp towel on top of ur bunn coffee maker if ya have one. come back tommarow and u should have a few split open, but not much for roots if any. next day u might have 1/4 inch root on a few. works every time. usually sprouts outta the ground after 2 days. goodtimez

I have learned im horrible at germinating, I can do everythign else no problems lol..I have found the only way to germinate at a 95% rate with my seeds is ...
Directly in my soil.. It stays moist, I water it every other day and jsut keep it under my 400 watt hps. IT works so much better then the papertown meathod i have found.

another good way is to wet up starter soil make a hole with a pencil or something go about inch from bottom of cup cover hole with a little soil then seed and sprinkle of soil now cover with serran wrap and a rubberband with a little razor blade slit for air place on heating pad can use light or not up to you but after seed breaks surface of soil must remove plastic wrap and put under flour tubs i use heating pad untill i transplant like 3 weeks
good luck

I am happy to report that all five of my seeds germinated, so i guess letting the paper towel go dry for several hours wasnt the end of the world lol. Put them in cups and they are trying to become seedlings. Thanks for the comments guys. Pot smokers rule.
