Seedlings under Fluorescent or MH

Is it more beneficial to put your seedlings under a 4' fluorescent bulb (temporarily) so they can be inches away and not have to stretch, or straight under the MH where they can soak up the real good stuff, but risk them stretching because the MH will have to be farther away...?

they only stretch in veg when you turn the light off.

24/0 for veg.

I'd like to start them right under the MH. It's been years since I last grew plants, so I've forgotten most of what I had learned. Is 18" what you want for veg/flower? At what height would you have it above the seedlings? It's a 600W MH and HPS for flower.

if you have fluoros and MH, i'd use the fluoros until they get maybe 2 sets of leaves then put them under the MH.

if you don't have both, i'd probably go with MH all the way. just vary the height for them

I do have both but my room is set up with the MH in somewhat of a permanent position and to swap it out with the fluorescent for a week or two wouldn't be worth the effort. So if I can get away with starting them under the MH then I'm a happy camper. How high would you recommend the light be for seedlings? And am I correct with 18" for veg/flower?

do a google for a hps/mh vs lumen distance chart. you'll find it eventually: it shows a "good" range for every hps and or mh wattage bulbs. i'd say higher than 18 for a seedling IMO.

VEG you are good at 24" with a 600W MH. And 18" for a 600W HPS should be OK in flower - use the back of the hand method as a guideline.
