Seedlings doing shitty

Hey there,

So my seedlings aren’t doing too well and I’m not sure what the problem is. Seem to be growing a lot slower than last year, which was my first year. Sort of yellow too, and the leaves are kind of curled. I think it may be too much water but I’ve only water once — however, I planted the seeds into soil that was pretty dang soggy. The lights are standard LED type white lights that I’ve grown other plants under without problem. I keep the room at about 72 F and they’ve also had a heat mat, so I don’t think they’re cold. Do you think they can recover or are these stunted for good?

They seem pretty puny for about a week old:C7945063-1028-4312-A503-CFC5DF9DF5D9.jpeg

Are the stems really skinny? Kind of woody?
Do you have a fan on them?
They seem to be stretching too.

like canna country said, heavy soil, maybe light isnt close enough if they stretch too much, other then that add a bit of a breeze with a fan to toughen them up makes a massive difference trust me it can destroy the plants if they dont get enough excersize. good luck time will tell, learn and start again if u fail

fill the pots up to full with soil to reduce the amount of stem showing, drop the lights a little bit to deter stretching and give em a day to respond to the changes... they dont look bad for what they are :)

Im open to any and all questions, anytime, no question is ever bad or wrong.

But I question your commitment! If you take away the "week old" comment and show these seedlings to any grower they will say they are perfectly fine no issues at all!

My 2c is dont set expectations that are not relevant i.e. how fast they grow from germination in first week or so. Only observe the plant and be patient!

Thanks! I will stick with them, of course — just fretting. I wasn’t that worried until I pulled up pictures from last year and saw the seedlings were considerably bigger after the same amount of time... But the light intensity was probably stronger, now that I think about it.

Container size has a lot to do with it. Smaller containers that are transplanted grow a lot faster.

they are in no way ruined and they should turn out fine if you do the right things in the next few weeks, and make sure they are transplanted into a adequate pot and adequate soil with right amount of light air and water and temperatures should be fine

biggest thing is, keep trying keep learning you can do it in time i have failed more then i have won hahaha

Just as an update, I’m pretty sure the soil is the problem. I usually get really top notch stuff but had to settle for some rando shit from BiMart on account of limited shopping and travel. I checked today and the soil is still waterlogged as hell even tho I haven’t watered since Sunday. I figure I will let them dry out more and then go super light on watering. Hopefully I can leave them outside more when the weather here clears up and then the soil will dry out faster in the sun. Probably will help also if their roots manage to grow bigger. Anyway, just shows it’s worth investing in good soil.

I don't think you have anything to worry yourself over, aside from being sure they don't get wet feet for too long (soil looks a little heavy). Never the less, don't sweat it. Good luck.

So basically no growth over the last week and a half since my first post, in fact looking worse. I’ve cut way back on watering but I think they’re stunted at this point. I waited until they were nearly bone dry before watering yesterday. Note the super curled yellow leaves and necrosis at the tips. This is from too heavy overwatered soil, right? Any chance they’ll still grow or are these done for? Luckily I’ve got a decent amount of seeds from crosses I made last year. I’ve started some more seeds just in case but I want to avoid the same mistake in the future — especially if I spend money on new genetics.

Gentle fan blowing just enough to just wiggle a tiny bit. Light over it. Temps between 75 and 85, preferably 78. Humidity around 65 to 70%. Dont water except tiny circle around seedling and not every day.

Which of the above are you not getting right?

Fix asap.

You must have the basics down to have success. Im guessing its too cold.

Warm it up to 78, no heating pad now. Do not water if at all moist. Get whatever light at the proper starting distance, furthest recommended in the manual. Get a small fan going pointing indirectly at them. Wait. They will grow unless in garbage soil.

soil looks heavy and not getting enough oxygen, temps could be not in the right zone for optimal growth such as too cold

if you have seeds fix soil , fix temps and start again, within 2 weeks if everything is dialled in temps humidity and soil, you will be further infront of these plants and they will not be stunted, try try try again.

look at my journal and how good my seedlings are going.. they are like 2 weeks old or so and pumping, also a feed of nitrogen will help these plants if u want to keep them going

I will follow your advice but I don’t think low temp is the problem, as I had them in a small room with a space heater kept at like 75 F. I don’t have a humidity meter but will get one next time I drive to town.

Your seedlings are over watered and under fed. trust me. it's got nothing to do with your temps. the top leaves are curling under which tells me they are over watered 100%. and the yellow Cotyledons tell me it's under fed. it's very simple. if you want to fix it then water less when you water. if you are giving them 50ml every 3 days then give them 25ml instead. and add some plant food at 1/4 strength. Don't forget they are only small seedling so they don't need much water at this point. but they could do with a good feed.

So do you think i am giving wrong information? have you seen his latest picture he posted? it's got yellow cotyledons which should indicate they need feeding it's common knowledge and the top leaves are curling which means they are over watered a quick google search will tell you that BobBitchen
