Seed won't germinate

Yo yo,
How goes it y'all!
So on the July 27th I started germinating 4 seeds. (X3) Sweet Tooth (X1) OG
All 3 sweet tooth seeds grew their tap root inside of 48hrs. However the OG hasn't. I put it in a cup of water like the rest...it sunk to the bottom after 24hrs. I wrapped it in wet paper towel and into a ziplock bag for another 24/48hrs but no tap root. I read online if you scuff your seed lightly with sand paper it helps to soak up water. I also read adding Seaweed extract to your cup of water will help it form a tap root faster. I did all this too. So today aug.2 I still do not have a tap root started...WHATS WRONG. is the seed dead ? It was very old bag seed. But it was nice and brown and sunk to the bottom of the cup meaning it took the water. Can you help me figure out what to do.

Its not that you did anything wrong. Some seeds take over a week. Most that take this long are just bad seeds though. Id put it in a paper towel in a closed bag full of air and give it a couple more days. Its pretty common that a seed doesnt pop. For me it might be 1/10 on average is a dud, more in some cases. I had a pack of 20 afghani seeds once and only one made it out of the soil and died soon after. They were free though so whatever

Its possible it was just old. The older the seeds the lower the germination rate

Sounds like u play with ur seeds a little trying to find tricks for faster results. Ive always had good luck with simply soaking in water from 18-24 hours and then planting directly in soil about 1/2 inch deep. seeds should germ within a week. some take longer. I've had some take up to two weeks. some pop within 48 hrs using my method. hope this helps

I always throw the seeds in a cup with coarse sand and shake the piss out of it. The scratching on the seed coat breaks the hydrophobic layer.

It's probably just a dud
I think so too. But now 3 of my seeds grew nice tap roots, I planted 2 sprouted but one has not...it's been a week easy and the two are already growing their first sets of leaves while the other hasn't even broke through the soil.

That other one probably won't if it hasn't by now.

I put my limit at about 10 days for germination. After that, just roll a new bean.
So I noticed last night the tap root finally emerging. I'd say in the next 24/48hrs it will be ready to plant. Super happy to see if is finally forming it's tap root :D

Would you say I can plant this ? Is this seed / tap root ready for soil ? It's been like this for a few days and germinating for 2 weeks.
You can plant a seed at any time, without doing this. The only reason to germinate is so you dont waste a cup of soil on a seed that doesnt pop, and so you can see if the seeds are good. Of course you can still use the soil after anyway if it doesnt make it.

Personally nowadays i always let seeds sit in a cup of water for at least 24 hours or until they sink then plant in soil whether or not they sprout. Keeps me from messing up the taproot planting them and gets them started off quick

I would see if it grows a bit more and doesn't die lol if you plant it now and it's dead in a couple you'd be waiting on a dead seed xD
I just got a 30+ year old bean to germinate :D
Howd you keep it stored? Ive got a ton of seeds i keep in my fridge in a little jar inside a big jar with water inside the big jar to keep them from freezing too quick if the fridge malfunctions

I suppose the water also keeps the temp stable in the jars when the fridge is opened.

Well my friends mom did the storing lol she just saved her seeds up throughout the 70s and 80s in an airtight jar. I'd say it's probably safe not to store them in the fridge, just in an airtight jar with no moisture and keep it in a dark cool place :D
