Seed Positioning

Why do I see mostly people saying place the seed in soil with the root tip facing down and a few saying with it facing up. Can anyone give a definitive answer, I am translating instructions to someone so I can start my grow.

Isnt that a common sense answer...... come on now...........

Root down seed up.
The root doesn't come out of the dirt so it should go down.

root down, coz roots grow down wards and the seed head will push upwards.

Like the other guys were sayin, roots don't grow 'up'

Much obliged... That's what I had it as and was going to print when I read somewhere to go the other way. I'd always rather ask a stupid question than make a stupid mistake. Thanks!!
