Seed Germination

Okay so I decided to germinate some seeds that I had but the thing is, their old. Like 5yrs old atleast but I figured heck, I have them so might as well see if they'll work.

Well heres the scoop. A few of them appear to have a tiny white tap root starting that is ever so slightly coming out of the shell but does not seem to want to come any further. 2 of the seeds have sat like that now for a few days where as 2 more have recently shown white heads but like the other two have not come any further.

In the past... I've never experienced this, either they sprout root tails completely or they do nothing at all so has anyone else ran into this ?

I just found an old batch of seeds from like 3 yrs ago and germinated them. The same exact thing happened. I didn't get a single sprout out of them. They tried to start a tap root but wouldn't go any further.

Maybe some of you have heard of Gibberellic Acid (GA3), it's a plant hormone that causes cell elongation, and has been used in the cannabis industry to create feminized seeds, as well as with breeders to cause plant growth.

However, Gibberellic Acid is also used to germinate seeds that are very difficult to germinate!! Such as 1000 year old seeds, or seeds that would normally take 2 years, down to a few days.

That sucks to hear. My last grow was done using seeds from the same bag/batch which were also around 4-5yrs old and I had at least 60% sprout so it was odd that none would sprout this time around.

Anyone know if there is a reason a tap root would start but sudden stop ? Seems odd that it would start and sudden stop.
