Lions (Pterois volitans) is an Indo-Pacific native that aquarium enthusiasts (presumably) released off the Fl/Bahamas coast & having no natural predators are multiplying like mad.
Was pretty sure that I remembered discussion on that before naming a grouper of some sort.. but not many fish will handle those poison spines and live to tell the tale.

Another of the Lion's Pacific neighbors, the Panther Grouper is invading the same area, just not with the success rate of the Lion.

Cool vid of the Goliath - we didn't' see many big ones when I was growing up in S Fla (we used to call them "Jewfish") - prior to their protected status dudes would hunt the monsters w/ bang sticks.

On a side note, I stuck a good one with a spear off of Cuba - but didn't "stone" him & he was nice enough to let me have my gun - but he kept the spear. :cuss:

Yup, that is the Jewfish - I just didn't want any of our RIU smartasses twisting any references of the name to being Jewish, or otherwise causing a headache - is why I left it out. Would love to go diving again soon, have to see if neuro clears spine problems before that's a safe idea though. Haven't been in more than 6 years now, and there's nothing like being underwater... well, there is - but am honoring your request in your initial post... hahahaha

used to go to grand cayman with a guy i grew up with. his parents had their own medical practice down there for around 9 years. scuba makes me uneasy with all the gear. freedive spear fishing for hog, dolphin (mahi), flounder(gigging), lobster etc.. kayaking at stingray city, easiest gigging for dinner youve ever done. his dad is a surgeon, talk about a master of filleting a fish. its been years.... :leaf:
