Scraggle Weed

I keep letting my plants "just grow". I dont manipulate them. I keep ending up with a lot of "scraggle" bud underneath the canopy. This stuff ends up as a usefull bi-product but, I want buds. If I cut off the scraggles in the beginning, will I have larger colas and larger buds more near the canopy?? please advise

Yes, we call that "popcorn" bud and it's a huge waste of time to trim and you get next to nothing for the effort. Some growers trim the bottom 1/3 of the plant because they do not want to mess with the popcorn bud. The bottom does not get that much light anyway and it allows air to circulate better and makes under-canopy maintenance easier. The plant can also use the energy it would have put into that popcorn bud to make that massive cola. That's the way I roll.

Sweet! Thanx, Pimp. That's exactly what I suspected. To review in different words; what I lose in popcorn, I gain mostly back in the form of the cola I want anyway?

Look into how to lollipop your plants. You trim off the lower branches about a week or two before flowering and the plants will focus more energy on the cola and buds at the top instead of producing popcorn buds. You can trim. You can also space your plants better or get a more powerful light that will penetrate further into the canopy.

damn now i know this. i spread my plant out lol.. got buds everywhere. but its a single plant in dwc under 400 watts hps
It depends on how you want to grow. Sounds like you are doing LST, basically training each branch to become a cola. That's a great way but it's very time consuming. If you've got mother plants and can successfully take a bunch of clones every two months, you're better off doing SOG and shooting for one main cola on each of a bunch of single plants.

Hey pimp, how do you just get one big cola? Do I trim off all the branches but, not the nodes?
Yep, keep the bottom 1/3 of the plant trimmed. Basically you want to deny the plant any opportunity to grow any side branches, just one big ole fat cola. This is the SOG method; if you just have one or two plants then you might want to create a bush, but that popcorn bud is a royal pain in the ass to trim. Takes forever to get a zip.

Potpimp you do know your stuff. I've never actually heard of lollipoping but it makes sense seeing how the hormones work. I'm going to give that a try with SOG in my stealth once I get my new mothers situated.

Thanks mouse. I've got baby plants coming up right now that are going to be my moms and I'll be doing exactly this.

Yeah, I have a cyclical garden as well. I'm doing Flying Dutchman's Dame Blanche from the white line. Supposedly I can get 100g/plant. We'll see.
