Sansi 15w Full Spectrum LED bulbs from Amazon

This is the opposite of advanced but for many, that is a blessing so I wanted to show people that you can in fact veg some decent cannabis plants with these suckers. I planted the seeds in rockwool in late June, they sprouted early July. When I started the grow, I had only one bulb hanging and really, it was just an experiment to see if they'd get the job done. When I saw how well they were doing, I added two more bulbs using a 3 way splitter fixture. At that point, I severely underestimated how much light these were putting out and f'd up the growth of one plant due to light distance (shout out to leather lungs for recognizing the problem). I moved them from 12" to 16" and the new growth is looking normal again in just a few days. Anyway, tent is 2x2x4 and my biggest issue with these lamps is their spread - it's a pretty narrow beam but they run nice and cool and nothing could be easier in the realms of DIY...I don't really consider this a true DIY by any means considering I've built cob based fixtures from scratch years ago. In hindsight, I should have purchased something like a qb 120 but under driven it...I don't really need much growth in this tent and since I'm manually feeding, I think the pre-built hlg-65 would be too much light and subsequently more upkeep in this tent than I was hoping to deal with. So that's the near future plan and I'll repurpose these bulbs for some light neglected house plants.

Pics are after 3 weeks - Royal Queen Seeds Pineapple Kush to the left (topped 3 days ago), Humboldt Blue Dream to the right (she's the one to suffer the worst blow to the light being too close but as you can see, she is bouncing back well). Node spacing is tight in both. Nutrients are modified Lucas formula with RO (added cal-mag and Si to the mix so it's not true Lucas).

Yeah that's how much is in it at this point. Sansi has a blurple one too that looks identical but costs $5 less if you're considering this and want to save some cash. Also, I went about this light in stages - it was an unplanned decision...just kinda went with it and got curious. Should be pulling 45w

Yea, for 90 bucks you already get 5pcs 2ft EBgen2 strips and a HLG-80H-C700B. Would be ~90w, 175lm/w in 3500°k, ~1$/W and it could be used for flowering too.
I like well-made lights based on bulbs but often they are not really cheaper in comparison. EBgen2 strips does not need a heatsink at 700mA so there are no costs. You could have gotten much more bang for the same money ..

Yeah, that's not the point of this but I agree. It started as a $30 investment and turned into "lets just see what happens." There are many reasons I can see this light as being useful and just wanted to show people that they work, much better than I expected anyway! I honestly thought they'd underperform the old 4 tube 8ft fluorescent I used for veg but these are better.

Yea, compared to cfl's LED bulb intensity is awesome. Is there a way to remove the lenses? You mentioned bad coverage and without you would have ~120° .. You could reduce the distance too.

I love to read results about these DIY grow ideas. To me, an HLG-65 would not be enough light, let alone too much light for a 2x2. A 120 watt qb would be barely enough, IMHO. Using your less efficient LED bulbs, I would want close to 200 watts in there for flower.

I agree with Randonblame - see if you can remove the diffusers for a bump in efficiency.

I dunno - my plants in the 2x3 are loving the 100 watts of Sammie strips they are getting:

I could turn it up to 150 but there doesn't seem to be a need for that.

How about when you are wall to wall greenery and flowering? Your strips are probably 50% more efficient than those bulbs....er, check that... 100+% more efficient that those bulbs. 1050 lumens at 15w = 70 lumens per watt.

It's a tough school that most people have to go through when switching to LED.
The market can barely overlooked by LED beginners without help and the scammers use the fact that many people still search first on am4zon, e3ay and so ..
With a few fake reviews they still find enough dummies.. and I may say that.. after all I had also a shitty Mars light from e3ay back then, lol!

Yeah the bulbs definitely need more wattage

Agreed. I apologize if it came across that way i just felt he should spring for more bulbs in that space (especially for flowering). I seriously love seeing other people's success using non-standard growing ideas.

The sansi bulbs are large, inefficient and apparently cost a lot. What's the point? Of course you can grow weed with any light source, we already know that. The bulbs I use from the local supermarket are 20 watts and put out 2520 lumens and they cost a lot less than 19.90$. I'm sure you could find similar bulbs where ever you are.

ps. A HLG65 would not be too much light, I'm using one in a 35x35x50cm tent (about 1x1 I think?) and I wish I had more light.
