Sannies Columbian Gold 1972

Yea, mine took 13 weeks but I had my lights at 9/15 schedule. Some of the finest sativa I have ever smoked. I had real Colombian grown Colombian Gold back in 1979. Not nearly as good as this. I use a 10,000 K fluorescent light. Use some sort of white light on these great sativas imo.

The later Colombians were mixed with indica, after early 70's. Not as good imo. The yield on this '72 Cg is almost nothing. The buds are so thin. The high makes up for it though.

Thanks for the reply
So you bought the sannies brand?
Yeah I started burning in 78, and all there was was Columbian gold back then...and I agree with you, best smoke I ever had...
I think 82 was the last time I saw the real McCoy for sale...although it was about 1985 when I found 2 oz`s of it under my mattress...pure heaven

I´m also interested in Colombian genetics, but they have been heavily polluted by illegal growers there, to the point that Santa Marta Gold, Mangobiche and Punto Rojo are (almost) completely gone. Colombian black from the eastern plains might still be found, but "cripa" (various hybrids with Afghani and European strains) has taken over the market there.

Right now I´m soaking a so called Colombian Gold 72´ from Underground Seeds Collective, hopefully it won´t dissapoint. It would be interesting to exchange pictures and compare with Sannies CG and other samples available. Any old toker with stashed Colombian seeds? bongsmilie

just checked the underground seeds website...they got the same picture as sannies
heard of Columbian black, but not those other names you mentioned...

These were the strains available in Colombia back in the 70s-80s. Punto rojo ("red dot") was very appreciated for its potency and high, Santa Marta is what was known as Gold (also known as "mona", blonde, down there, Santa Marta being the beautiful region where it is grown) and black was the least popular of the bunch. Mangobiche (unripe mango) is also a classic, found now and then in diluted forms.

If you are interested, ACE Seeds and Cannabiogen have worked some of those lines, although I´m sure some old stoner around here might still have precious seeds. I was not informed enough to save them back then, it seemed it would keep going on forever.

People that smoked the better Colombians back in the sixties to early seventies agree that the Cannabiogen and USC seeds are good representations. I have heard from several on the internet. And then there is me telling you I did better than late seventies CG. It is true even under artificial light - my artificial light is better than most- I did better than the mountains of Colombia. Colombia is right on the equator and the mountains go up really high. You add those two and you have the most intense sun, which brings out the best in sativas.

That CG back in '79 was picked early by Juan Valdez's retarded brother Pablo. It had small white seeds in it no mature seeds. The high was speedy and lame really. He should have stuck to farming coffee. Juan Valdez says,' Colombian mountain grown coffee/pot is the richest in the world.' The earlier pot was grown with care and undiluted with indica, sixties and early seventies. You could get seedless and semi seedless varieties and it cost a lot. Later it went large scale commercial and they would even seed their plants intentionally to make it weigh more. Guys with no pot growing experience, who did not smoke and had no love for the plant, trying to make as much money as quick as they could. Can not blame them really, most likely had families to feed.

If I grew my seeds out in Colombian mountains, I am sure the high would be better but I do not have that option and really am quite happy with what I have now. I have mountains around me and have thought of sneaking a few small plants up there to finish the last week, but that is just an idea for now. Maybe find someone that would let me set my plants in their back yard for a week or two.

There is a pot lover over in Colombia right now and he says it is quite hard or impossible to get the best of the original stuff. Crippi or Dutch and American genes are taking over, the old sativa lines are fading out. Same everywhere else in the world. In Cambodia they favor Skunk and all the hybrid strains we have in America. They buy seeds from the internet and are really proud of their White Widow, AK47 etc.

This is an excellent post, thank for chiming in!

Do you mind if I say that you did better than the Colombian growers, not the Colombian mountains? As you mentioned, the potential of the tropical Andes for cannabis production is outstanding, but in Colombia it has been grown for people who were/are not only in a hurry (which might explain the bland high and immature seeds) but also don´t smoke, don´t have respect or love for the plant and whose agricultural experience comes from the poor practices imposed upon farmers during the last half century. Apply careful cultivation techniques in Colombia and you tend to get an outstanding product. 99% of coffee grown there does not represent the actual potential of the land, but what it can do despite human (and market) shortcomings.

While I´m all for preserving landraces, particularly Colombians in my case, there is so much fire and variety to be found in US genetics that it would be a shame not to try those expressions of the cannabis plant (while all you guys are fed up with Cookies, I haven´t even smelled it). Tropical outdoor grows of US strains might show their full potential, and breeding with (Santa Marta) Gold, Mangobiche and Punto Rojo seem to be a beautiful backdrop to make mixes.

I just hunted through a pack of regs from WoS that were supposedly landrace worked by WoS, definitely not representative of old school CG. Flowered out 2 females and 1 male. 2nd female was just a filler, not bad but not 70's CG. The favoured female pheno turned out to be purple and finished in 49 days (?). That one has a strong/trippy stone but not a lot of flavour, kind of like sour dirt smell & flavour. Nice plant but not the CG I remember back in the day.

The other old school strain I flowered out a couple of months back was ACE's Panama Reg. Now that pack I flowered out two phenos that took me back to the 70's, very good representation of old school Panama. They were 10 and 11 weeks in my environment, LED COBs with flowering initiators at 11.5/12.5.

LOL, in the name of experimenting I actually bought a "collection pack" from WoS, supposedly with CG, Wild Thailand, Kilimanjaro and S.A. Kwazulu. Did not have high hopes for it, but a 49-day "landrace sativa" cracks me up. I will pop them someday, and compare to other CGs.

Lol, yeah, 49 days? My current environment has been finishing strains fast, with indicas and indica-leaning hybrids 7/7.5 weeks has been pretty common. But the Panama's still took 10/11 weeks. Will have a look for those Cannabiogen or ACE seeds at some point and try again, I only do regs and they've been hard to find, why I grabbed those AoS to try out.

That I know of, you can find them on ACE website and Alchimia seeds (also Cannabiogen website, but I´m not sure how that one works). Try Cannabiogen Punto Rojo, a real treat.

So many strains, need more space! I was impressed with the ACE and Cannabiogen stuff, will be looking at them again for sure. Next order is some African, there's a little bank in Canada who keeps some landrace African sativas. They were recommended by a well known sativa lover to try their Malberry line, supposedly legit landrace.

so you liking those flowering initiators? how does it work, for like a perpetual garden, explain as if I were 5 years old please.

I buy a flower initiator ( like so : http://timbergrowlights.com/200-watt-osram-oslon-ssl-80-660-nm-hyper-red-grow-light-kit/ or the growmau5 one?)

have it run half hour at lights off? so this much money for a light that only runs 30 min a day?

please explain :) btw, I dig your blue ripper, I still appreciate that we both went for a similar cross at the same time, and just like you, I was going for just a something high in CBD and ended up with my very best tasting / smelling strain ever! and more CBD than THC! I forget what yours? harlequin x jack the ripper x with what? mine was Blue City diesel x (Senora Ampero X Pennywise)... still my #1!

Thanks for the link (my wallet won´t appreciate it too much). Those landraces look like something to try, and the price is not too bad. In the name of genetic diversity, it would be interesting if we start seeing more of these type of stock in crosses from big name breeders, but that is probably just a pipe dream.

Hey how are you Santa, been doing some gradual changes every couple of rounds to find a happy medium between faster finishing and acceptable yields using the initiators and lowering lights on cycles. I was at 12.5/11.5 and went down 1/2 an hour every few rounds. When I hit 11.5/12.5 the initiators seem to be doing their job quite well. Last round I pulled 3 different strains/4 phenos at 49 days. They seem to be knocking off 4-7 days depending on strains and yields are really. no different. Just pulled a couple of 5 gal QP plants out.

Basically the initiators "extend" your lights on and lights off period by transitioning the plants faster from one state (light-to-dark & dark-to-light) to the next. It's claimed they speed up the transition by up to 2 hours. They didn't seem to do as much until I dropped to 11.5/12.5. I went 12.5/11.5, 12/12, then 11.5/12.5. Used some control clones in each run so I could get a read. I use 40w of 660nm for 10 minutes before lights on, then the LED's through 11.5, then 40w of 730nm for 10 minutes lights off. Hadn't seen those but look like overkill (and expensive) 200w would be for a huge room, I'm only running 1w/sq. ft. to get those results, you don't need much. There's a couple of threads on initiators in the LED section.

Yeah we have some very similar strains. That Blue Harley is Blue Ripper (Blueberry x JTR) x Harlequin. Just pulled a BX1 tester pheno that's almost all CBD, making up a bigger batch to hunt through in the new year.

A Colombian black from gage green and shoreline is an old school skunk.
Is it a "pure" Colombian? When I´ve looked at GG I´ve only seen the "bastard series", which was an open pollination of Colombian black females with their male lineup at that time. How is the high of yours?
