S1 vs. serial backcrossing.

Folks-
What is the major difference between back crossing to S1 vs a traditional serial backcrossing to the mother plant. Genetically, does using an S1 for further breeding give a wider phenotype range than a back cross (cubing). Does S1-ing stabilize like cubing? Thanks. Bron

An S1 is similar to an F2 in terms of variation. It's like an F2, but made with a single plant.

Back-crossing will stabilize traits toward a P1 plant. Back-crosses can made toward either a mother or father plant. The latter is useful if you have a good male, then you can select females from the successive generations instead of the guess work of selecting a male each generation.

Carrying a line from F1 to F2 to F3 etc is good when you want to create and stabilize a new hybrid strain.

What is your process to recognize a superior male or is it more of a stab at an earlier stage. Suppose trichome and internode length etc

The gametes used.

Genetically, does using an S1 for further breeding give a wider phenotype range than a back cross (cubing).
Comparison is irrelevant because it mostly depend on the initial state.
A S1 made from a F1 anyway give a F2, a BX1 made from a stable F7 will mechanically be more stable at F8 without talking about the "best method".
What you're asking can't be generic.

Does S1-ing stabilize like cubing?
If the main traits of the female you're reversing are mostly homozygous, you will get clones in seeds. But calling them stable is abusive.
It's not possible in one shot with a BX, cubing-stuff or not.
