I have 31 gallon tubs with four cfl's and two tubes. I have a 4 inch intake and outtake fans running all 12 hours the lights are on. I tried the DIY micro filter with active darbon covering the output of the exauhst fan and its doing its job but the temps are way too high. Right now I have the tubes off and lid pryed open to keep temps at 85.

My questtion is how can get the temps down but still use my carbon filter?

It's simply a 4in air duct and on the end of the duct and a coupler rigged with leggings ziptied filledd and zipped tied agian to the end of the duct.

No, do not lower your watts. Keep your fan on all the time, even when the lights are off. Also make some passive intakes that allow air to come in from outside without a fan. You can also try getting a higher voltage fan that will push more air. Make sure most of the air leaving your box is coming from the top where all the heat stays from the lights. You should also have a fan that blows across the lights constantly to keep them cooler as well as push the air towards the exhaust. Just some ideas I've used in my grow and I maintain 65low and 85hi consistently with over 350watts of cfl.

good input but what about my carbon filter? I can move the outtake fan to the top of the box and make some passive intake holes but won't the smell still leak? I am set up near the beach so outside tempatures don't effect much so should i still keep fans on all night? could I just run them for a hour after lights are killed?

I agree with GreenZebra. Run your fans 24 hours a day. The more air moving around in there the better. I'm also doing a rubbermaid grow and it sounds like my setup is alot like GreenZebras. I have 2 passive intakes on the bottom, one fan intake at light level, and a fan outtake just above the lights. My temps are 60low and 83 high. I dunno what to tell ya about the smell though. This is my first grow and I have no prior knowledge about the smell. Hope this helps ya man.

If you are still having heat problems lower the Temp in ure house a few degress.
Passive intake work great! got temps down to 86 and I can work with that. I have grown before with temps at 86 and had lil to no effect on yield/potency. I am living on budget so lowering the degrees in my beach rental would require me to be the first person on the block to purchase an AC unit and or swamp fan. The box is in my closet so when I leave the doors open the intake holes are doing the job. THANKs:joint:!
