Roots...

So I recently changed my res up from a 4 gal to a 15 gal. When I switched the plants into the new setup I took a peek at the roots. It seemed that near the hydroton cup maybe and inch or so down, there was a clump of roots with a darkish tint. I would say about 10% of the roots are in a mini clump. They look like I could separate them with my fingers or some utensils. Would it be safe to try and unclump these or should I let them be and try and get more water movement.

I would leave them and let them grow out, you might break the roots if you go messing with them. But I'm a soil grower, so this is just opinion.
