Roots, the old miniseries redone.

It has been a decade or more since I saw the first one. It was a good story.

In case you didn't know, History and AMC have redone the series and it has been shown this week. I must admit, very well done. I like that they have some things more accurate. My memory of the first one seems like Kunta Kinte was walking through the bush one day and some greedy white men throw a net on him and drag him off. I like how the new one reflects the reality, Arab/Muslim slave traders caught Africans and sold them to Europeans.

I thought it was poetic justice how Kunta was taken as a slave when his father was someone who was in a position to stop them, but he was willing to look the other way as long as they were taking slaves from up river.

To me, the characters were better in this new version.

I have but one nagging criticism. It seemed throughout the series they took liberty to show historically inacurate scenes that didn't impact the story for the sole purpose of making white people look bad.

They showed a scene where 3 passing white men on horseback confront Kunta Kinte and Fiddler. Its unclear who the white men were, but they appear to have some sort of legal authority. By way of "nigger tax" they demand Kunta give up his baby. Would have never happend. That would have been stealing from their owner. Fiddler, an old house servant who played music instead of manual labor, and is elderly, goes on to kill two of the three mounted and armed men, him with no weapon.

Another time, two white men club a slave to death within feet of his owner, who didn't want him beaten but wasn't aware, just because he was on a wagon that might have had weapons in it. Again, killing another man's slave was a serious crime. This was added just to make white people look evil.

Did anyone else watch it? Notice the same thing? Facebook friends of mine who are black seem to regard this as a historical documentary, where the slaves were always a breath away from being murdered by some random white person who did not own them.

The evils of slavery did not exist in its physical violence, though there was violence and it made it worse. It wasn't because of the rape, though it did happen and was wrong. Slavery was evil because it dehumanized people. I've read enough history to know that although the threat of violence was always present, if a slave conducted himself within fairly clear boundries of acceptable behavior, he could expect to not be beaten. That isn't a defese of slavery, just reality.

I've watched the original roots. Enemy tribes actually caught and sold they're enemies to the whites. It was common practice. Usually tribes that were at war.

Well I'm sure that's true in many locations. But all one has to do is look at history. The Arabs were major slavers, they still are today. They started the slave trade in Africa.

What you describe is essentially what roots depicts. It was just centred in a fairly civilized area of Africa. Many tribes, one kingdom.

Probably depended on what part of Africa slaves were captured.

Hey you guys in the south are supposed to be sorry. Lol, Sorry that the West was the first to outlaw slavery and that slavery is still being done in the East.

Bunch of bullshit really just something to divide the country IMO we should be looked up to for abolishing slavery not kicking ourselves in the ass for not being black. Lol, It's sad seeing the white guilt @UncleBuck puts himself through. :)

Totally agree.

When It comes to the way my ancestors treated the slaves, collectively the white men decided to give up the practice and decided to elevate the former slaves to equal status.

I'm pretty sure white western Europeans are the only ones in history to have done so.

And we're blamed for it.

I don't mean to imply this happened overnight with 100% agreement. But it didn't take long and opinions shifted quickly in favor of emancipation and equality.

Tho I do feel sorry for the native Americans. I think they got it worse. White hated them more then they did the blacks. Almost murdered into oblivion. There was over 100 million Natives in the Americas before Columbus's arrival.

you should videotape yourself explaining to black people that they should be more appreciative of everything you and your slave owning family did for black people.

There should be a sense of some gratitude. Unless they would have rather grown up on a Sally Struthers tv commercial set.

Life in America has always been better than life in Africa. Doesn't mean slavery was ok.

Well if it wasn't for slavery in America they would have been slaves in Africa and their would be no jazz, rap, hip-hop, R&B. So they should be happy we freed slaves and where like the first in history to do so. Black people in EU, UK not so much but in America they have damn good opportunity if they simply just get out of the fucking ghettos. Which is pretty funny about Compton I would have trouble getting in that ghetto it's pretty expensive. Lol

How would your post apply to the heirs of a black person that held slaves ?

What are your thoughts on government "reparations" to people based solely on their race ?

"We" ???

It sounds like you are okay with holding an entire race responsible for the actions of some individuals based solely on a similar race.

Isn't that one of the primary components of being a racist, viewing an entire race collectively as you have done TWICE in the quoted post ?

isn't your desperate attempt to allay responsibility a signature move of white supremacists?

They should be grateful you don't see me crying about the land and ancestors whitey killed. Lol

So we or whitey, honkey, jive Turkey? (You really sound racist of whitey) :)

Sure black lives matter but no more than anyone else's.

Except, I'm NOT trying to allay responsibility, if I were involved, I'd ASSIGN responsibility to the INDIVIDUALS that DID it. I don't assign guilt or victim status to other people who DIDN'T do it or who weren't even alive at the time, but only share a racial characteristic of the guilty party or people victimized by the guilty party or parties. You do though.

You just revealed YOUR RACISM, again. You are assigning blanket victim status and blanket perpetrator status based SOLEY on race, Exalted Grand Poopy Pants Klanman.

Nice attempt at the use of "allay" though, but really not applicable to my post.

I totally would and have without video.

What do you think black folks are so base in their emotions that if confronted with an uncomfortable explanation they would immediately lash out in violence?

This says much more about your opinion of blacks than mine.
