Root rot? I started out using subculture M, but after reading about h2o2 decided to switch to that instead. Since my res temps are too high (room temp 80-85) and I do not have the equipment (yet) to adjust them, I definitely need to focus on killing all bacteria. My buckets are black (light proof) and my water is RO. About a week ago I noticed my buckets were a bit smelly and the roots were either brown or had brown stuff on them. I read that this could just be a side effect of the subculture M and not necessarily root rot. Are brownish roots absolutely always signs of real root rot? Could this just be a neutral side-effect of the subculture M or maybe discoloration from the nutes? It seems like I have already noticed improvements since switching to h2o2 but that could just be a placebo. When I switched to h2o2 I also changed the water and thoroughly cleaned the buckets and hoses. Also, if this does look like root rot, my plan is to continue with the h2o2 and add either dutch master gold zone or SM-90- which one do you prefer? If this does not look like root rot, what is it? Could it be a less severe algae or fungus? Other than that, my plants look really good even though I know root rot might not show much at first up top. Also, the second picture plant looks worse and has TWO airlines and airstones in it. I know temps are low but it definitely should have enough oxygen, plus even more now that I am using h2o2. I was also thinking that perhaps I should lower my water levels to 1 inch below the bottom of the net pot so I can fully oxygenate the roots closest to the net pot. Or would it be better for them to be fully submerged? Thoughts? 20121012_210942.jpg20121012_210747.jpeg

how old is the plant? i will have roots many times bigger than that after one week of veg. start using frozen water bottle to break the high water temps and a good beneficial bacteria, like pondzyme, will be much better than h2o2.

Yes, that's root rot. I went through it three times with my two DWC grows. The first grow, I got it early, hit them with h202 (which seems to always stunt growth for about a week) and starting using heisenberg tea, got my plants 3 ft tall and 5 weeks in to flower, and then got hit again. The second time it hit, my root balls were the size of basket balls. In 7-10 days they were a giant mass of brown crap. I harvested early and got an oz of premature bud that was pretty weak.

So for my second grow, I bought a rez chiller and kept my res sterile and at 66 the entire time. I even treated with chlorine every week -- got a pool tester and took took the water up to 2ppm for 30 minutes every rez change. When that wasn't working, I was adding h202 every day. Finally, I bought some dm gold zone. That seemed to help for a couple of days with nice hairy white roots, but then always back to brown, slimy. Plants were never happy. I had been cloning in coco and my clones were doing so well I switched to smart pots and coco for my 3rd grow (which was as huge success) and never looked back.

Now I personally know someone that had a good grow in DWC, so I know it can be done. But they never got root rot. I had serious temp issues (92 for hours on end) in my first grow and I'm guessing that got me the root rot. It seems that once you get root rot, you can't get rid of it (or at least it's very, very hard).

Depending on your situation, you may want to take some clones. I even recovered some of my DWC plants by putting them into coco. After about a week they started growing. If you're going to stick with DWC, I would research some proven DWC methods and follow them exactly. I think a lot of people talk shit about growing and DWC seems to be the sexiest, but based on my experience, I dont' think 2/3s of them have ever even grown. So be careful about who you take advice from.
