I agree and the more automation the less i have to get off my ass and water them but at the moment i just want to crack getting it right in cubes.

They got purple stems and stunt after the initial few days growth, i added light ferts and started seeing positive changes although its too early to say.

My question is if a light dose of ferts is all they needed as these were just getting ph'ed water and not doing so good.

My next batch will start at 200/300ppm see if they are better than these on tap water.

Pics arent the best but the plant above at 2 weeks with few roots showing should be way bigger and not purple stemed. Already they look happier from the light ferts i gave them yesterday.

:-)

They will go into an x-stream V2 propogator but no reason they wont do well in those little plastic holders they are in at this early stage. Roots quite like the little air gap at the bottom as well as they explode everywhere.

They do not need any food when they start
you need to get them under the light as soon as they germinate and the tap root is 1cm or they will stretch a lot some stretch regardless
when the little root comes out of the tiny block , plant it into whatever medium your using next, don't let that little root sit in water that is not moving

i put them straight under a 400w mh about 2ft away as it keeps them warm too, i am in the uk, but a 125w cfl will do for the first 2 weeks or so

you shouldn't have any problems really, it unlikely food will be an issue at such an early stage its most likely too much water, and or poor lighting
also too much heat around the seedling is not so good

peace

Purple stems are not unusual in my experience long stretched out stems generally a lumens issue . I quit rock wool years ago .easier to start in solid then rinse out of the dirt and into clay balls and nets.
Ahhhh.....

I didnt think this could be done. But then i know whit about hydro...

I never could get my marijhuana and rocket stems green, always purple, but my lettuce always come up green.

The rocket seed on the right come up before i added ferts a day before the one on the left that came up yesterday when i gave ferts. Not the best pic but the one that got the ferts earlier on the left has a brown green stem and the one on the right purple. Maybe this will happen with my mj plants and i have another popping up in two days in a cube with very light ferts. Ignore the lettuce seedling behind them.

Sorry to post non mj pics but these seedlings made me think possibly ferts are the difference (and sorry for all the posts, damn phones hard work)

2 plants in the same rock wool is not advisable and is poor practice.

the guy at my grow shop recons cfls over those t5s any day. that could be ur problem? i veg my girls with a 85w cool daylight cfl and the once they start showing there second set of leaves ive chucked them under my sunlux light in the tent and they love it. They have only been under it for not even a week and have been growin awesome!! maybe try a bit more light. u can get the cfls pretty cheap and just add them to ur setup.

I think ill run this one through from here and see what difference light ferts make as recomended in the first few posts.

Thanks for all the suggestions on lights temps air flow etc but i have always had that dialled in.

Watt for watt t5's are much better than cfls, hydro guys here always try saying leds are better than hps!

Its common practice for home growers to overplant toms, lettuce etc etc especiay very small seed to thin out those that struggle and are weak, this also ensures all cubes have plants. I dont just grow weed ya know ;-)

It takes a light touch,I wait until it has 3 nodes .and is plenty strong from the fan action .I works for me . consider growing a mother and cutting clones and building an aero clone machine . Then you never have to deal with seeds again unless you want to .

"The nutrient is not entirely necessary- a plant without roots can't assimilate nutrients, only water- but nutes in the clone watering solution assures nutes are available to the plant as soon as it has formed root nodes. This gets nutes to the plant a day or two before you actually see the roots out of the bottoms of the cubes"

I took this from Al b fucts thread titled 'A batch of clones in rockwool"

Now i know a clones not a seed but seems to be you feed as soon as first roots develop, would the same not be true of a seed and what im trying at the present?

Clones are not seeds .
IMO the early root is very tender and Im unwilling to interfere with them at that very early stage and Im not in a big rush. Nature will take its course. forcing nutes on them on day one or day 14? Ill wait and make sure there is a small fan blowing lightly that is more important . 4 100 watt equivalent cfls is usually

enough light for seedlings 3 of these will make that configuration

I run a t5 4way lightwave unit just under 100watts with brand new grolux bulbs which i got just after i binned my cfls. Ive never looked back and is a seriously top piece of grow equipment for £100.

post up pics of them as they grow man. would be good to see how they go :)
This is the younger of the two mj seedlings i posted on page 1. Its had two feeds of 250ppm and looks bit better, no new purple growth or stems getting darker and in 24hours has grown a little. Ive tried to get the same angle shot for comparison. Bit of luck and ill post a pic tomorrow.

Im not seeing any negatives from adding ferts and notice the cotyledons have perked up loads, they are normally quite droopy when just fed water and was another change i was hoping for.

Most care about final harvest whilst im fussing trying to get perfect cotyledons :-)

I've ran both CFL's (300) and T5's to start and now run T5's or 400 DS. As for the jiffy pods they hold more water lol. The only thing I haen't tried is rapid rooters.
