Right now I am using a plastic cup and some cheap soil and its not working very well at all right now, which leads me to my question.....

For my seeding stage which one of theses should I get?

Rockwool Root cubes
or
Jiffy Pellets

Also are these nessessary or just make this stage a less of a hastle when transplanting and what not.

Advance and Pros and Cons would be very helpful. Thanks

from my experience, jiffy peat pots are not the best way to go because they retain too much water and can contain some creepy-crawly stuff inside (bugs and sometimes even mushrooms).

I personally like rockwool because it offers the perfect water/oxygen ratio for the roots and as long as there is something warm drawing the roots down and not up towards the light, the seedling should stay in the rockwool cube.

If you had the option, I would definitely go with the rockwool. You don't have to have it to germinate seeds, but I find that it simplifies the process of transplanting when the plant needs a bigger home :)

Personally, I've never tried rockwool, so I can't help ya any with that. BUT, I DO use the jiffy pellets, the kid that expand when u soak em in water. Honestly, no, niether the jiffy orthe rockwool are a must for starting seedlings. Myself, I use the jiffy pellets simply for ease of transplant as soon as they sprout. But they come with that mesh stuff or whatever it is aroud it, once the plant sprouts, and ur ready to put it in it's new home, make sure u take off that mesh. I didn't one time, and that particulair plant was deffinately stunted from it. I like to put a slice all the way down the pellet once I've expanded it with the proper ph wate to make it easier down the road to take the mesh off.

i've only used jiffy pellets with high sucess!! they hold water well and i've heard stories that rockwool is more suceptable to mold. it's prob a personal preference though, because i've seen both work to perfection. just get both and see what you like better. peace
