My Response to Sen. Klobuchar:

"Dear Senator Klobuchar,

I have recently read through the PDF explaining H.R. 1254, and had a few points that I would like to bring up. I understand that some of the points I am making are not directly in context to the pending bill, although, I think there is definite validity to them nonetheless.

Are you aware that, "Alcohol abuse kills some 75,000 Americans each year and shortens the lives of these people by an average of 30 years"

Or that, "Every day, on average, 11,318 American youth try alcohol for the first time, compared with 6,488 for marijuana; 2,786 for cocaine; and 386 for heroin."

Also, did you know that in 2009, there were 141 alcohol-related-deaths in the state of Minnesota?

I am curious to know, how many Minnesotans have died due to research chemicals (not including poly-substance abuse involving Pharmaceuticals and/or Alcohol)?

I understand that you voted Yes on regulating tobacco as a drug, although, I have yet to see a bill regarding its scheduling. Over one-in-five Americans dies from Tobacco abuse (not including the 50,000 Americans that die from Second Hand Smoke).

As Nicotine and Alcohol are two of the most used substances in the world (along with being two of the more addictive substances), I think our priority should be getting these two substance away from children and/or teens. Worldwide, tobacco abuse kills over 5 million people annually.. how many deaths annually can be attributed to research chemicals?

Here is an interesting chart (regarding addiction) that I found on Erowid (an online library of information about psychoactive plants and chemicals):

"To rank today's commonly used drugs by their addictiveness, we asked experts to consider two questions: How easy is it to get hooked on these substances and how hard is it to stop using them? Although a person's vulnerability to drug also depends on individual traits -- physiology, psychology, and social and economic pressures -- these rankings reflect only the addictive potential inherent in the drug. The numbers below are relative rankings, based on the experts' scores for each substance:

Nicotine 100
Ice, Glass (Methamphetamine smoked) 99
Crack 98
Crystal Meth (Methamphetamine injected) 93
Valium (Diazepam) 85
Quaalude (Methaqualone) 83
Seconal (Secobarbital) 82
Alcohol 81
Heroin 80
Crank (Amphetamine taken nasally) 78
Cocaine 72
Caffeine 68
PCP (Phencyclidine) 57
Marijuana 21
Ecstasy (MDMA) 20
Psilocybin Mushrooms 18
LSD 18
Mescaline 18

[Research by John Hastings]"

I also urge you to read through:

http://www.tfy.drugsense.org/tfy/addictvn.htm

and look at the Henningfield and Benowitz ratings for substance Withdrawal, Reinforcement, Tolerance, Dependence, and Intoxication. I think you will be surprized when you see that all three charts are congruent.

If you notice on that chart, Nicotine falls in at approximately five-times more addictive than Cannabis. I figure that relating the addictive potential of Synthetic Cannabinoid Agonists is nearly on-par with Cannabis. Why are we wasting time controlling substances that injure a few hundred people annually compared to substances that ruin the lives of millions?

On a side note, let's look at the other damage Alcohol causes:

"90% of all campus rapes occur when alcohol has been used by either the assailant or the victim."

"55% of female students and 75% of male students involved in acquaintance rape admit to having been drinking or using drugs when the incident occurred."

(Information provided by Iowa State University - Substance Abuse Prevention)

"In one study of interpersonal violence, men had been drinking in an estimated 45 percent of cases and women had been drinking in 20 percent of cases."

"In 1997, 40 percent of convicted rape and sexual assault offenders said that they were drinking at the time of their crime."

"In 2002, more than 70,000 students between the ages of 18 and 24 were victims of alcohol-related sexual assault in the U.S."

"Twenty-eight percent of suicides by children ages nine to 15 were attributable to alcohol."

"An estimated 480,000 children are mistreated each year by a caretaker with alcohol problems."

(Information provided by marininstitute.org - Violence and Alcohol Statistics)

I guarantee you can not say the same for ANY of those statistics when involving Synthetic Research Chemicals.

Although I am not expecting a reply, as I understand you are probably flooded with 1,000+ of these style messages already, I would very much appreciate a reply.

Sincerely,

(Edited For Security Purposes)"

I think it is time to get a petition going ladies and gentlemen...

If I can find some statistics about deaths/harm from research chemical use, I will convert the information to a visually-based system (graph, chart, etc.). I forwarded the same message to Senator Grassley of Iowa.

Great! Tell everyone you know! If they are serious about putting this forward into legislation, then I am very serious about starting a petition.
