Recommended tent size using a 400w HPS

400W is supposed to be ideal for a 3'x3' canopy. You can get a bigger tent though so you have room to move around and room for expansion. Your canopy coverage can vary some though depending on your hood type.

Yep, I'm running a 400w cooltube in my 2x4x5' tent now, 3 plants, today is day 60 of flower. It's a little tight but works very well, but I'm going with a 4x4' my next run and a air-cooled hood instead of tube.

Ok, I have a 400W HPS -- bought it for a 2x3x5.5 tent and I think it was perfect for that size. My plants outgrew that, so I transferred everything to a 3x3x7 tent. My plants were tall at that point, so the light was still fine, but I did feel that tent was too big for that light. I would have wanted a 600W for that for deeper canopy penetration and for more power around the edges of the tent.

Hope that helps!

3'x3' is optimal but a 4'x4' works well to if you control you canopy height.
With a 4'x4' you need to keep everything very even in height, short and wide instead of narrow and tall.

While a 400w will work just fine in a 4x4 but its much better suited for a 3x3, unless you are really good at height control.

Check out my journal, I used a cheapo winghood 400w HPS for almost the whole grow and it turned out great for my first time. Over 250 G's off 4 Autoflowering plants in my 3x3x6 Tent.
