Reasonable access not an option if you live in Alberta

So I got a very upsetting email today from the Greenleaf Medical Clinic regarding the renewal of my prescription. It basically said that the alberta college of Physicians and Surgeons has deemed it unacceptable for people with a medical condition to use telemedicine(Skype etc) to obtain their medical document. Which would be ok if the college also hadn't made it next to impossible for Albertan doctors to issue the documents themselves. So now there is really no way for a sick Albertan to obtain their documents. Fuck I hate this province....

Sounds like an affirmative defense for having your own grow to me. Canada used to be such a progressive place. I really hope y'all learned your lesson with this Harper schmuck.

My sister broke her leg in three places in a car accident and ended up with some pretty painful nerve issues. They have given her every medication under the sun and nothing works except for pot. She's been desperately trying to find a doc in Alberta and literally can't find one that will even discuss mmj. She uses it anyways but would obviously like to be legal as she has a legitimate medical need.

my neurologist would love to be able to do it for me but he's said on numerous occasions that he fears he could get fucked over if he does it for his patients. The college in Alberta now requires physicians register as a doctor who prescribes cannabis, takes additional training on cannabis ( which the apparently make it very hard to do...how I'm not sure but he said it was very inconvenient to get the training) and they must now see you every three months. The college also issued a statement to doctors strongly discouraging doing UT, even if the doctor is willing to take all these extra steps to help people. its so disgusting that people are so willfully ignorant and/or biased against something with virtually no negative side effects that helps so many people.

I was just thinking...how is this even possible. I thought the college governs doctors only in their respective province and did not have any power over patients. Could one of the doctors on here correct me if I'm wrong?

The college has zero say when it comes to patients...they are there to govern the doctors. Also, an LP is a federally licensed business and should not be in a position to determine which doctor is 'allowed' to sign they need to tell the college to back off. As long as you have a signature, even from a skype doc, you are entitled to the same rules as every other Canadian IMO. I would go public with a complaint against the college.

Has your sister been diagnosed with CRPS or RSD?

It is true that the Colleges control the doctors in their own province. The college in Alberta cannot stop you from getting a skype document from another province. Unfortunately you are using Greenleaf, and the College in BC has said they don't want Drs doing skype.
I wonder if Greenleaf is only saying no to renewals versus new patient$ ?
I suggest contacting Dr Hart in London Ont, I'm sure he will do the skype.

Last time I checked there was only one Dr in Alberta that bothered with the additional training.

If I'm not mistaken does this not go against the Supreme Court of Canada's ruling for medical access????

Secondly how can the college decide a mass decision on people's health just by the province they have residence in.

IMO if it is just the province of Alberta doing this then it violates constitutional right to choose health over liberty.
Fucken sick also you should be ashamed of yourself Alberta even the province of Manitoba has more respect and compassion for its citizens and that's fucken scary!!

The Colleges have massive egos....bigger than the doctors they control.
Somebody should sue their ass!

Talk about putting people through crual and unusual punishment!! For what so the children are safe.... Not the ones with epilepsy, cancer, autoimmune diseases, etc the government, college, HC whoever has now made medicine that can benifit and help so many ailements and also save lives out of reach of a whole province of Canadians!!

When will the madness end?

Alberta is the worse for sure.
This all stems from the day Health Canada said they were going to basically put the responsibility on the doctors. The Colleges said uh no, we don't have the clinical trials, safety information etc... and you (HC) wont even say it has any medicinal value, so uh no we are not going to be the gatekeepers.
Most provincial colleges have put forward new mmj guidelines, still waiting for Ontario.

Sounds to me like you have a legitimate lawsuit to throw at the Alberta College.

In order to get standing to sue, you'll need to document your attempts to get registered and likely get busted for a personal grow...

I've been a freedom fighter in my basement since before a substantial fraction of RIU user were born. I say we use our trowels as swords and FIGHT!

For the record, I have a felony conviction for the horrible crime of growing plants in my basement, from back in 1992.

I'm proud to tell everyone about it now, as incontrovertible evidence that I was persecuted for...

Wait for it... (Lord knows I did)...

Well, I definitely agree with ttystikk that you should simply start growing. Hell, I'd go as far as to invite the police over to say hi so you can get the ball rolling on this lawsuit but of course this isn't a reasonable option for most. I might consider it if I weren't already legal and facing your battle though.

So I guess you would know better then most. Have you heard tell of anything about what the Ontario college plans to do and when would they implement the new policy ?
