Really confused

Hi people,

I'm new to the whole growing thing and have been getting really confused from all the different techniques I have read for germination. Here is what I have done so far:

I put 1" thick perlite in a propagation tray and soaked jiffy pellet in pH 6.5 water with quarter strength root stimulator. I placed the seeds about 3mm into the damp pellet and placed this on the perlite. The lid is on the propagator and the vents are shut. This is placed in a dark cupboard in a warm room.

The seeds have been in the propagator for just under 24 hours.

What I want to know is when do I give the seed light? I thought I knew but I have read SO many different answers and now have no clue. If anyone could help I would be really grateful. Thanks.

there are so many ways , but it needs a few things .... dark calm and wet lol... honestly ive seen people put all there seeds in a shot glass , put it in a very dark place for like 3 days and there good ol germies ahahah, but rememebr seeds have 50% rate of turning to male = hemp = no good to smoke...... see if u can get clones from ur hydro guy freinds , 420 shop any way possible , gaurenteed female , save u about a month of bullshit

Darkness till the seed sprouts its root. I've had great success just using a wet paper towel laying seeds inside and folding it up slip into a plastic bag and sit it on my cable box. I usually check 48 hours after i've done this and usually have found most seeds sprouted. But complete darkness until its poped its sprout.

Thanks for the quick replies!

Ahhh so I let it sprout a root before giving it light. Thought it was right after the seed cracks when the light was supposed to be applied.

I should have just used paper towels!!!

It goes right into your growing medium..no light
light kills roots thats why we use dark containers...

Sorry when I meant 'it', I didnt mean the roots, I meant the seed contained in the jiffy pellet. Thats right isn't it?

but a cheap propogator and some jiffys soak the jiffys and ring them out a bit plant your seeds 5 mm deep as they come(one per jiffy)put the lid on your propogator place in a dark drawer 21-23* leave for 70-85(keep checking) hrs and as soon as you see them lift from the jiffys give them light and you will get 100% germ rate.paper towels suck why transplant a stressed tap root when you can just plant and go.works for me every time.

Hi Ludacris. what do you mean by "wait until they lift from jiffy"?

Do i not have to wait until the seed cracks? Or do i just leave for 21-23 hours and put under light no matter what?

Hey people,

Ok so following on from earlier, my seed has cracked and I can see a little bit of white within the shell, however no taproot has emergered. The seed is resting on a jiffy pellet in a propagator. As it has cracked, does this mean it is ready for light?

First of all the seed needs to be in darkness to germinate and once the taproot is 1/4 an inch long youthen put into the jiffy pellets about 1/4 inch down with the root down. The once lightly covereed water wit hsome distilled water (to set at right ph) aand add light.

I have just seen a little tap root develop out of both of my seeds (roughly 3-4mm). Have just placed under light still in their jiffy pellets. Started to give them 18:6 lighting just now. My light is about 1.5 - 2" above the jiffy pellets. does all this sound ok to you guys?

no, keep it there as is, until it pops a root, knocks the shell off, and shows its 1st true leaf. Patience is virtue.

Thanks for the replies guys. I have kept my seeds in the same place and still showing no difference. They have been under light for 2 days now (18 hour cycles). They were left in a propagator 2 days before this. Is this something to be concerned about? Should they have sporuted by now?
