Re using soil?

has anyone tried reusing soil?

i was thinking sterilize the soil then add the plant needs you know like adding organic liquid food.etc instead mixing it with compost.

but i dont know how to sterilize or even know such idea if it exist?....

anyone tried doing this?

you can if you want to sterilize you soil put in you oven an bake it not tottal sure what temp you need or for how long my oven i think starts at 350 i would cook it for the total temp is met for at less1/2 hour

Lots of people recycle their organic soil by re-amending it and letting it "cook" again". Organic is the only way I can see viably cycling soil over and over again as it actually gets better because you can take advantage of amendments that usually wouldn't break down in time during the first grow as to be actually useful, like green sand.

One thing is for sure, you shouldn't sterilize organic soil.

i re use my soil and on my 2nd grow i noticed a better yield i did a thread a while ago and i cant remember who it was who said it but its was "the soil breaks down more in the long run" but i reuse mine and throw it out every 3 grows or im im short on funds use it for another grow but add bonemeal+grow more into the soil and it was perfect again

i reuse for a year then replace. don't sterilize. you'll kill the microbes.

You could solarise it - depending on your climate. To do this, put it outside in the sun with black plastic overtop. Let it get nice and hot (60+ degrees to kill pathogens ideally), and away you go. The downside to this method is that you could also be killing all the good microbes too. But at least this way wouldn't introduce chemicals or get to TOO hot and unmanageable in say an oven. Commercial nurseries steam treat their potting medium to sterilise. One way to overcome this would be to treat it however you see fit, and then use a microbial/compost/manure tea to reinoculate the medium for planting. It also depends on what are the components of your soil medium - some may not take so kindly to heat treatment, or it could adversely effect the chemistry of the nutrients. If anything, sift the soil to remove any roots and plant debris, let it 'cook' for 2 weeks to rest, then reuse.

Yes, I have been use a organic blend from Colorado Reds Premium Mix and we run 3 rounds with only adding a couple new bags each time to fill in the root holes let behind.

I for got....... Yes we have had bigger yields and faster growing and greener plants throughout. Don't sterilize organic soil.

i added a bit of bonemeal, and dish soap as a wetting agent over time in soil the wetting agent is washed out i use about 1 big spoon per 2 litres of soil last for about 5/6 weeks then add a pea size amount to each water **not feed**afer 6 weeks

should mention i use a small cement mixer to remix all my old soil
