Re-growing scallions from the store.

Hi Peeps! Well, here's my story. I have a flood/drain hydroton system in the windowsill, mainly for peppers but I also have some basil, mint, lettuce and cilantro in there, grown from seed.
3 days ago, I bought some scallions for eating and left about 1cm+roots on the bottom and put them in the system. Already they are growing! At this rate I reckon I'll be ready to cut again within a month. Also, the small root system means I can pack them in tight and they use little room.
I'm fairly sure this can be done in soil too.

yes you can i do this with the store bought ones also its cheaper and a lot faster then seeds. i will buy some from my local farmers market and eat what i want off the stalks and plant the bulb in dirt. even if there isn't really any roots left on the base if you score the bottom a lil bit the roots will start faster in those spots. takes about the same time as a clone would to get roots and is like the same process.. also it's like buying eatable bulbs..

So, can I keep this going? Can I keep doing it with the same bases? Also, will it work into winter? I have no experience with scallions.

You can do it over and over and over. Winter, no. But they are easy to transplant and will grow indoors with the same (minimal) care.
