Re-Activating Charcoal

You can re-pyrolize at 800-1000F. Otherwise it's not like new.

Temperatures below that, even 500 in the oven, won't remove everything. So maybe your carbon is back to 50%? 70%? Who knows

The links above show a weed burner / flame thrower from a store, and that'll get temps where you need them

The risk is burning the charcoal, so some ash might be created. No harm, just don't use it in the filter

Correct! But for the home grower - your still saving over rebuying.....That's the corporate logic for drug companies re-charging of lab filters...

So many different opinions on this, it confuses me. I am going to try the easy rinse and bake method.

Maybe it's not "re-activating" it, but if it makes it work again, that's all that will matter to me.

Rinsing works to a point, especially if you're in a dusty environment and/or you're not running a pre-filter on your can. I do it with mine before I dump it and get a few more months out of it, depending on the stank :). Best to use highly purified water IMHO. Never baked it, just dried it for a bit. Actually I've packed it back in wet but it takes a few hours for it to start working.

I would think there would be benefit to putting the spent / washed charcoal in the oven on self-clean. Not sure if wet char would be good in the oven during self cleaning. Prolly want to air dry first.
