Rant: Why do people lie?

It seems more and more people are resulting to lying to make themselves look better or cooler than they really are. First off, may I state that I myself lie on occasion - everyone does. I lie to keep myself out of unnecessary trouble or to keep myself from getting in an argument etc. But when it comes to lying to make one’s self look better, it starts to bug me.

I see people lie all the time - “Oh I’ve done this and that in my life”, “Yeah I’m a cop and I make $500,000 a year doing datacenter work in my spare time”, “Yeah dude I smoke weed, I smoke it before I make web designs that I sell for $10,000 and it makes them better”

Of course, there’s a difference between internet presence and real-life presence. On the internet, one can become anyone or anything they choose. They can be an ex-marine, a convict, a stoner, an english teacher, or a college student. However, in real life, that’s no the case. When it comes to real-life situations, I see people lying to protect themselves and others from unnecessary arguments and dilemmas, and the occasional big lie about one’s past experience (or, among teenagers, drugs and sex). However, online, one can hide behind their monitor and be whoever they want - usually without other’s disbelief (assuming it’s not something made up on the spot and all angles of the story are covered). For fuck sake, people can be as many people as they want.

Let’s make an example out of this. When Bob goes online, he talks to two people. First is Joe - Joe is a web designer who looks up to Bob’s kick-ass graphics designs. Joe is a nerdy 14 yr old that has a never-ending list of questions. Bob always uses google (as many people seem to not know how to use) to find answers and relay them to Joe. Bob steals other’s work from not well-known graphics artists and tells Joe their his. Bob also talks to Stacy, a 19 yr old girl he met a few weeks ago in a chat room. To Stacy, Bob is a really nice cool guy who has a good education and is 21 and going for his masters in computer sciences. The reality: Bob is a 42 yr old man living with his mother who wreaks of old bbq potato chips.

The above, of course, is simply my pointless ranting and making up bullshit stories, but I believe it brings across my general point that someone can be multiple people without much problem, and for whatever reason, people seem to believe whatever they hear.

Why do people lie? Online, anyway, the answer is simple: because they can.

I don't give a fook who tells me what...

Lying is a son of a bitch.. cause then you have to protect your lies...

and then you attract people who like you for the wrong reasons...

The person who does the lying is the one with all the problems..

Nobody owes me shit.. they don't owe me the truth..

and when I say "that dude lied" I am also saying.. "that I know the truth"

and when somebody claims to know the truth... You know your dealing with a delusional liar...

so go figure... just love people.. it's the easiest way...

if you suspect somebody lied to you.. then give them endless opportunities to straighten out "their" story...

Nobody wants to be a liar... they lie cause they don't want to be judged harshly..

stop judging people, and they will stop lying..
