Raising Chickens!

I have come to realize there are more than a few RIU'ers with chickens.
So I thought maybe we should have a thread about keeping chickens.

I live in the city but can still have chickens. I bought this pre-made coop from craigslist for $350. Made with re-purposed lumber, and fit right into the back of my truck. Came with nest boxes & roost bars. It was ready to occupy as soon as we burried hardware wire all around the outside of the coop. My entire yard (front & back) is fenced, & they get to free range the whole place most of the day.
I bought 2ea, 1 year old laying hens & we had our first fresh eggs the next day.

Our 2 chickens, Rocky (Barred Rock)& Rosie (Rhode Island Red) are happy in their new home & give us 2 beautiful brown eggs almost every day.

This is just to get things started.
Let's talk chickens!

I love the beasts. I had some when i was married. Once I'm no longer renting, I'm having chickens again. Free-range eggs are a basic pleasure, as are the soothing noises the critters make. Assuming, of course, HENS ONLY. cn

surprisingly enough, chickens love a day at the spa.

i'll go out back and take some more pics of my flock. right now we have one of our chicks sitting on 9 eggs to hatch.

each bird has its own distinctive personality, too.

maybe i'll even get some pointers in on how to build a nice coop for under $200.

We just started keeping chickens, we have 2 RI Reds, 2 Plymouth Barred, 2 Blue D'Uccle Bantoms and an Easter Egger. Surprised our dog actually herds them when we let them free range. Funny as hell watching a Pit Bull protect his little chikens

I looked on craigslist as well just to get an idea and I found a good coop and remade it to exact specifications for a quarter of the price. Looks like this(a pic off the internet)images (2).jpg and I had twelve chickens when I got it but hatched out a few and have had some taken by foxes, so I am down to about 12 again. As for breeds I have a egg producing leghorn and A barred rock. I also have a really smart ancient breed the aricauna which will fly up too my shoulder. Then I have a duck and Recently this pair of small skinny wild duck have been spending the night in the trees and come down to eat with the chickens in the morning.

Araucanas aka Easter Egg chickens are the shit. We had quite a few hens and our roosters were always Araucanas. I love the different colored eggs they would lay. One would lay green while another would lay brown or white. That's the one thing I miss about our chickens. Those Araucanas. :(
