.....snip.....birds is lying eggs with weak shells now ....snip...
Buck you can often fix that with extra calcium for them. What I used to do when I had chickens was after using the eggs I'd bake the shells whiz them in the blender to grind them up, but not to dust, then mix that in with their scratch. Extra calcium prevents egg binding too.

ACK! The rep button is missing!! I wanted to rep you for that more than like you :) although I did like it too LOL. Aren't the Irish Wolfhounds so cool. They are so elegant in their movement as well and you wouldn't expect that from such a large animal.
Some of the friendliest family dogs and fiercest guard dogs. I once was Ice fishing in winter and one broke through the ice and fell in. It was trouble getting him out but we did and he was pretty cold but he was alright.

We used to mix oyster shell in with their regular food. Never had a thin egg shell problem.

Oyster shell is a good idea and certainly quicker and cleaner than messing with the egg shell prep. Did you put potassium permanganate in their water too?

yes but then you sit with a dead chicken in the yard for breakfast one morning.... I'm pretty sensitive, would upset me greatly.
UncleBuck admits to choking his. It's said to be quite humane. Even the chicken enjoys it. Pure win imo. cn

Not that I remember. We did, however, use epsom salts for chickens afflicted with green apple quick step. But that was rare. We had a very large pen with plenty of room and it was mucked out once a week.

Any that have followed my grows know I'm all about the carports.
So of course that's gonna transfer over to the chickens as well.
My last trip to Costco I picked-up a carport for the chickens.
It will provide shade in the summer & shed rain all winter.
My chickens now have a carport!

Great. Now they're going to get all uppity and start demanding shit like free cable and bubble baths.

(nice set up by the way)

My mind went to a different place. Chickens kept in full sun show damage to the clearcoat and trim sooo much sooner. cn

I have Muscovy ducks, Buff Orphinton chickens, and some I don't know what they are. The Buffs lay brown eggs, the other chickens lay off white eggs, and the ducks lay huge white eggs. If you buy chicks from a hatchery, please pay the extra 15 cents and have them vaccinated for the normal diseases they can get. If you have a lot, and they suddenly die off, contact the DNR and let any neighbors with chickens know. You may have a diseased flock that can spread, or possibly avian flu. I can't over state the importance of reporting an unknown large die off. Especially if there is an egg producer near by, disease can speed damn fast.
We get about a dozen eggs a day of mixed variety. If you get more eggs per day to where it becomes a pain to hand wash them, DO NOT buy one of those $150-$200 dollar five gallon bucket egg washers the hatchery's sell. It is nothing more than an over sized fish bubblier that you connect to an air compressor. It makes constant bubbles that slightly agitate the eggs and the movement of the bubbles scrubs the eggs. Search YouTube for home made egg washers. You can built one for $20 or less.
I use luke warm water, a little any non-foaming detergent, and a splash of hydrogen peroxide as a sanitizer. If not using a home made washer let the eggs soak for 15 min and hand wipe clean. If using a washer, let bubble for 15-20 min, remove egg basket, refill bucket with fresh water, put back eggs and bubble for 5 min. Remove eggs, package, and store.

Nice chickens everyone! I aspire to keep some chickens some day. Used to look after loads in a volunteer job, I was able to hypnotize the cockeral (named FogHorn for good reason) by placing him on his back gently, he would just lie there motionless. Can you do this with any chicken?

Yes. Used to do it all the time. Unless the chicken is hyper as shit. Calm them down first and then turn them over. :p

we have hypnotized our chickens just for fun. it's easy.

just turn the chicken on its side or back and do some kind of repetitive motion. the chicken goes limp.

it's kind of hilarious. you can google the videos.

How can I resist? If you play with your chicken and it goes limp ... you might be doing it wrong. cn

Awesome thread guys. Makes me jealous. We had seven hens but a neighborhood dog decided to break through the fence :( We secured everything but my wife's not so sure she can chance it again. RIP little chickens.
