I'm confused.

a 50W bulb? In a 40W fixture? And?

What type of bulb? Regular incandescent? (or a 'real' CFL watt rating?)

Keep in mind all of the ratings are undersized for safety.

Secondly, heat dissipation is a key item in the ratings.
(I work on European machinery and they under size the gauge of the wire, up upsize the temp of the insulation) This is the key. (not unlike over clocking a CPU) Keep it cool (aka:at the temp of the rating or lower) and you will be OK.

Now your home owners insurance may think otherwise.... As will NEC or CSA depending on where you at.

If you want to tackle these questions you can. I can't find any information on them. I believe this system is from 1980. Theirs nothing wrong with it. I just don't know how to use it for the well being of the plant.

Recently I have gotten a vintage Battle Creek Bisolar Sunlamp model 051 (120 volts, 60Hz, 800 watts). The two outer lights are type RS- 275 watt and the center is type RS-250. My question is how would I go about using this without getting the vintage bulbs. Is it useful at all for growing?

Yes, foil can actually hurt the plants, creating tiny burn holes. Not good. Mylar is by far better. Cheaper is not always better. (white paint of course. lol)
Gee, whats the focal length of foil? And every leaf is sitting right at that point from the foil?

Mylar is *clear* (I have bought quite a few Mylar/Kevlar sails for my boat, and they were clear. Sucked on sunny days). Its made shiny with guess what? Aluminum.
Its the wrinkles that cause probs. Doesn't Mylar wrinkle too?

I would just stick with white paint and understand your lights and space. I have knowledge of everything growing. I'm just not the best teacher. I haven't ever heard of the kind of lights I'm asking about.

Is it possible to substitute growing bulbs for a system like the one I described above? I don't want ultraviolet lights damaging the garden.

ive heard that UB(A? or B?) actually benefits a plant because the trichromes on the leaves are a natural defense mechanism to uv light... this isnt to say you couldnt go too far with it,, it definately would need to be in moderation
