Questions about PPM

So I was wondering what you growers use to calculate PPM, and what is PPM ? I know ppm stands for parts per million but I don't understand the importance of it in relation to growing. Could anyone explain?

I use a bluelab truncheun e.c meter it automatically calculates into ppm's for you but there is a simple equation to figure it out your self. Knowing your ppm's will help you know how much you are feeding your plants, in hydro you can find this quite useful and be able to tell weteher or not your plants are drinking more water or nutes. In hydro if you start your water with say a ppm of 800 and 6 hours later your ppm's are 900 or 1000 you know that your plants are drinking more water, and if in 6hours it says 700ppms you know they are eating more than they are drinking. Once you use one it all becomes aparent on how useful it can be. In my experience i would get a ph meter first though.

One of the cool things about hydro is you can give your plants the maximum amount of nutrients they can handle....This helps with the quick growth of growing hydroponic bud....you use a PPM meter to know precisely how much nutrients are in your water and how much nutrients your plant is using.....If the water level goes down and your PPM goes down then you know you can add more nutrients.....If the ppm level stays the same, your nutrient level in the water is just right.....If the water level goes down and the PPM level goes up then your feeding your plants too much nutrients.....Using a PPM meter you can dial in your nutrient levels to maximize speed of growth and the overall health of your plant.....You need a PPM meter for hydro if you want the best results

What's the simple equation? I still don't really understand...sorry

What about growing with soil?

Water without nutrient will have a ppm reading, where I live it is usually between 300-350 so adjust accordingly.

usually in the us the e.c to ppm is x500 and in the uk it is x700 or x.5 or x.7 so an e.c of 2.0 is 1000 ppm or 1400 ppm depending on which you use
