You definitely need an exhaust with that light inside a closet.

When I was still in the closet I made a faux door with some panda film and added a small "booster" fan with some simple light proof vents on the bottom.

Hey Baked,

I got myself a small grow tent from HTG, also 400 watts. You can look at it's footprint size and the equipment it came with and compare it to your non-tent kit. The tent kit came with an exhaust fan that got placed at the top of the tent. This, however, was not enough to keep inside temps under 100 degrees. That 400 watt light throws off some serious heat. I solved this by putting a 12" Vornado house fan at the bottom of the tent to blow cool air in. As my plants have grown, I've had to raise the fan, too, otherwise the tops started getting light burn. Now the plants are about 3 feet high, and the fan is on a 3 foot high box to blow cool air over the tops of the plants. This way I've been able to keep the temp at 75-80 and no light burn.

So, in short, you will have to think through your venting issue separately from what's included in the kit. You're probably going to need an exhaust fan at the top, but also an intake fan lower down somewhere. I guess it depends on your space. Just be prepared to try something in theory but then change it up when you get some actual experience with it in your set up. Just my opinion...

I would spend $ a lot differently at htg if I were you.

Here's what I'd do:

Heat mat: 20
starter cubes: 5
humidity dome: 5
hps light: 119
xtra bulb: 10
mh conv bulb: 10
xtra mh conv bulb: 10
easy 6 air cooled hood: 80 when you order with light
6" fan for hood: 25
ducting: 8
intake fan for room: 20
buckets 10
soil , promix bx 40
nutes, either technoflora recipe for success or if you want organic the general organics "go box" / both are about $40

Okay so I spent $400. This is how I would start out. Spending $275 on that other kit will not get you nearly what I have listed for just 125 more. With my list you're pretty much good to go from top to bottom.

Your closet idea I don't like however. I don't think it's a good idea to put a hot HID light in a closet even if you vent it. Tents seem to be more fire retardent than a closet. With that being said you need another $200 for a tent.

I'm glad to hear you say this. The potential for fire with all these hot surfaces and electrical cords where before I had none did make me nervous. At first I often tested how hot everything was getting, and I have to say I'm happy with the tent. It's free-standing in my living room, with lots of space around it, and heat does not build up. It exits the tent and I have an AC running on warm days/window open on cool days. No, I don't have anyone over...duh...but it's only temporary. I'm going to have a yearly "growing season" and then pack up the tent for the rest of the year so I can have a social life.

Can't sit here talking to these plants all year! LOL
