Question from Noob

Hey guys I am really new to this do you think i should get a 400w MH/HPS light or an LED light that has equivalent light of 400w??thanks

I would stick with the hps. Imo it is something that way more people are used to, not to sound like a sheep but you will probably have a more difficult time figuring out any problems since most are using hps. And they do work. Keep me posted if you do get the leds as I really haven't heard much about how they grow. Good luck on your choice and future grow.

Also I'm not sure about the leds but the mh/hps will take you through the whole grow with one ballast.

the HPS is cheaper and for the most part you don't have to do a ton of research on HPS. You need to do some research before you buy an LED. theres pieces of shit and legit proven LED's. for me...............nothing beats an ebay HPS system, for the money you can't go wrong. just make sure you can move hot air around

IMO nix the 400 watt idea and get into min 600 watt you will be very disapointed with a 400 watching a grow with a 400 is like watching paint dry )

I agree on the simplicity of growin with an HPS other than heat problems, which can be fixed with some good exhaust and an intake. But let's be honest. LEDs are more than likely going to be the future of growing due to the low wattage and heat. Yes LEDs are more expensive in the start up..but if you have the coin, I'd do the research and get a good one. Think about it. Between the price of a good HPS system plus the likely necessary intake fan and all it may prove cheaper to just splurge on the LED. I'm a buy it once do it rough the first time kind of guy. Also, in the long run the electric bills will be cheaper. An for god sakes you'll be an LEd grower. WTF is cooler than that? Nothing bro. Nothing.

Also, I completely agree with Drferver. I you do 400, might as well do 600 and increases your yield

i honestly think LED will never compete with HPS just think for a moment here the company hordilux prob spends more on research then LED makes in a year so even tho led is getting better dont forget so is manufacturers of MH / HPS why do i say this like talking Cars you remember Chevy and dodge littterally went bankrupt yet ford showed growth and profits and ford is the first ever vehicle ever made LED yet it grows in veg nothing to brag about look at myth busters thread of mine 3 weeks from a 3 " clone and i got 55 pluss inch plants you will never see that in led NEVER then we get into flowering where LED is extremely week

I cannot deny the examples you have given. There are many schools of thought and variables that go into good bud other than the light used. I'm a MH/HPS grower. Maybe for me the "different" appears better. I have trouble keeping temps constant and I have a high heating bill. Those are issues that LEDs don't have so much of. Unless I had LEDs personally I guess I could not totally and accurately demonstrate the proper positives and negatives of each. I'd love to see some of the same stain grown in different lighting schemes MH/HPS versus LED. I do think that we shouldn't necessarily be advocating for one or the other until we know more about the goals of the grower and the style setup. I have a 4x5x2 grow tent with a 1000w HPS. Mainly because my eyes are bigger than my stomach of ya feel me, but yea in my case honestly LEDs would have been better I believe.

you mention goals by a grower ???? wouldnt yield be on top of all of the goals time it takes to complete task ??? if you look at at the sun it provides approx anywheres from 80,000 lumens up to 110,000 on a clear day your 1000 is producing it LED is not you spend 200.00 and you litterally giving your plant the sun indoors led;s are what blackstars 250 watts ) and you paid what triple the cost and every LEd grower will add HPS in flower

now you mention some people grow in like a 2x 2 x 2 in reality WTF is that to get what 18 grams a plant lol why bother would be cheaper just buying crap of that corner guy most led growers are closet growers worried mom n dad will notice more of a power bill
i am glad you your running 1000 watts and havn't changed to led don;t waste your money
i have challenged any led grower to beat me in yield and finish times i can go 1000 to 18,000 watt grow know one has wanted to cause LED cant match it

I keep hearing about led info where do I find any? On searching I only find opinions. I'm all about being on the cutting edge but imo hps has been around this long for a reason, especially in a hobby like this where everyone is trying to get the best results, my gut says hps is the way to go.

I think 1,000 is nice!

You cannot run a MH and a HPS bulb with the same ballast unless its a switchable ballast. With that in mind I would go with ebay get at least 600w with a switchable ballast. I got a 1000w switchable ballast, reflector, ready set cord, yo yo hangers,timer and 1000w HPS plus a 1000w MH bulb for $340 leds cant come close to that.

Not entirely correct ... I run a 600W MH conversion bulb with my ballast designed for a 600W HPS. I like conversion bulbs for a limited-space grow. cn

Haha yes of course yield should always be top priority But exactly like you said keeping electricity bill down may be a goal of the grower as well. That's all I'm saying. Yes big thick beautiful nug is what we all want who wants popcorn bud? No one. But not all of us can have a system that puts out that much heat an that much electricity. Not all of us have the luxury of a large enough set up with a cold enough intake to compensate for a HPS system. Obviously MH HPS will put out exactly what you want and need. And personally I'd rather grow my bud using a flashlight and all the time in the world than buy shit from a corner guy haha. An no Drferver I will not look at the sun. Thatll make me go blind . Ha kidding seriously though Listen bigelephant Drferver is right on all of this. I do not deny anything he is saying. MH HPS will give you all you want and need.
