Question for anyone growing for more than a year... Enthusiasm still there?

Yes, I have had my ups & downs with it. I Quit my Job to spend more time on my Hobby. ^_^ I was slacking hard.
I am now getting back into my groove, ditching the grow bags, going back to the buckets w/ alot more training.

I'm wondering if any of you guys are starting to feel like growing as a hobby is starting to feel like more of a chore than anything else?

If you exclude the end product, and not having to find herb anymore for personal consumption...... are you still having fun with it?

I'll probably continue to grow at least on some level for a while. As I still enjoy it somewhat, and even if I hated it, simply having the end product makes it worth it.

But, like you mentioned, there are a TON of things I still don't know, and things I haven't tried, but I don't know if I have the enthusiasm to get into it.

Who knows, maybe my next home project might be home brewing my own beer? :)
Homebrewing is a great hobby also. I've been brewing for 10 years and it is very similiar to growing. Finished beer anywhere from 6 weeks to 6 months depending on what your brewing. Homebrew and homegrown go very very good together. There are startup costs just like indoor grows but once you have the equipment your good to go. You can make beer with an alcohol content of 3%, or like I like to do, 7-8%. After you have all the equipment, you can brew up 5 gallons for $30-$45.

Wine is a blast to make too and uses the same equipment as the beer except for the corker. You can make some top notch wine for about $3 a bottle.

I am interested in homebrew as I went into my local store a while back looking for supplies for my grow, and they had samples from the kits they were selling. The stuff was very affordable as well.

But the the point is, the several I sampled were literally the BEST beer I had EVAR tasted in my life. As an example, I don't like dark beer. I never have, I think it would take a lot of time for me to like it as well. But one of the samples they gave me was a dark beer, and it was DELICIOUS.

So eventually I will get into that as well.

Good perspective here.

I do something similar with my watering now. I use grow bags for my soil. I used to water a bit at a time, and it took quite a while. Now what I have done, is create a plastic box, lined with plastic that my grow bag sits in. Now to water, I just dump about a half gallon into the box, and let the plant absorb it as it wants. It's the best thing I have come up with since I started growing. It makes watering sooooo much easier.

that's an interesting way to water, the lazy man's way! well done! i had a, growing for lazy people thread, at OG way back when.

i seem to recall that watering from the bottom up is bad but i'll do some reading. the information leaks out once in awhile and i have to re-remember it! :joint:

if it's ok, i'll try it next time i do this:

the pic is from 2 grows ago but when i'm sexing them i use one gallon bags and these plastic containers would be perfect to put water in and let them get a good soaking. i'll have to think on it!

Yep, very similar to that! Same idea at least. And if I were watering that, i would literally just dump water into the big plastic container you have there and let the soil absorb. Definetely the lazy way to do things.

I started doing it initially because I keep a layer of sand on top of my soil, and watering really became a hassle as I was constantly having to reset and refill the layer of sand on top as watering disturbed it.

I corrected my top post, I initially said I used a plastic box lined with plastic. What I meant was I use a cardboard box, and I line that with plastic. That way I can shape the cardboard box to the shape I want to fit in my grow space.

It might not be the best way to do it, but it's a happy compromise between the best, and the amount of work I want to put into it. So far though, my current grow is the best looking plant I've had so far.

Ive been growing maybe 3-4 years. the initial effect has worn off. when i started growing I found it hard to stfu and not tell anyone what im doing (i didnt tell anyone but i was so excited it was always on the front of my mind). When i'd be in my grow room i'd literally sit down (usually on the floor) and just stare at the plants (high or not) for 2 hrs or so a day. no joke. i use to LOVE it.

I still do but that initial surge of joy has worn off (as i said before) so now its quite easy to keep it hush-hush. i never feel compelled to tell anyone. It is my passion though. Im sure as i usually get tired of things when that "new" feeling is gone but this has stayed with me.

I just wish their was a easily accessible job (i know its out there but hard to find a legit one) where i could legally grow plants all day. IM NOT TALKING ABOUT VENDING EITHER...i'd literally love to just JUST GROW the plants for whoever...be it a patient, a club, etc. as long as i could get a decent salary and the work would be consistent i'd be in it for the long haul.

I find it very peaceful to grow. sure i dont obsess over the plants as much as before but i can't find anything else i'd rather be doing...which is tough because the MMJ business is a hard one to get into...so for now ill just continue for my own personal joy and medical uses.

my goal one day (like this will ever happen) is to have grown all the strains available by major seedbanks. so by the time im 50 i might accomplish that goal....maybe.

I'm on the fence.

Sometimes its a labor of love....sometimes I cant stand it. I'm locked in to my house ....HAVE TO BE HERE every other day. Kinda sucks when you have a concert you want to see that's 100 miles away.

and its about to get even tougher with my 60 plant set up....obviously some things make it worth the while.

now if I could just get a recirculating system set up...I'd never bitch about anything.

is that a layer of sand to prevent gnats? does it work?
sand on top of the soil kills larva and prevents future attacks. yes it works ive done it. It works as long as you put a big enough layer (3-4 inches is more than enough but a 1in layer is too little imo)

Yep, that is a layer of sand. It works very well. I've tried soapy water, a few pesticides, and the sand works the best imo. After you do it, they'll be around for a few days, but after a life cycle or two which is pretty short for gnats, they are gone eventually.

The drawback is that it kinda makes water from the top a PITA. You have to readjust and distribute the sand over and over as the water disturbs your top layer. So that's why I originally started watering the way I do with those pots. It works great since I am now a lazy grower, i just know that when I need to water, I just dump about a half gallon into the pot, and walk away.

this is what i was wondering. whether it would create another problem while solving one. i like to use gnatrol, treat twice once when transplanting in veg and another time when transferring to flower. also i found keeping things clean makes a huge difference.

I had more fun with it when I had the space to get in my grow area, my new area is small and cramped. It's still enjoyable, but I don't spend hours in there like I used too fawning over the girls.

I used to keep my cab in my bedroom. It's pretty stealth, and when people we over, nobody ever noticed it. I would literally spend many minutes each day sitting in front of it staring at the plants with the doors open. I would almost be meditating.

My cab was like the briefcase on Pulp Fiction :) Now that it is in the basement, I don't do that anymore.

It's a real problem for me. Any kind of plant cultivation is very difficult for me. I am profoundly ADD which means my interest comes and goes in intense bursts and it's very hard for me to keep up the kind of low level consistent attention that plants require.

I think plants are fascinating and MJ plants in particular, not just because of the crop they yield, but I am not well suited to be their caretaker.

I have been growing for a couple of years now. I still love it, but I am probably not as enthusiastic as I used to be. And, I hate trimming!
