First, thanks to everyone who contributes here, I've learned a lot over the past two weeks.

Here's my question - What order is best for odor/heat control when working with:
-2ft x 4ft grow tent
-250w MH and HPS bulbs
-Cool tube for bulbs
-240 cfm inline fan
-DIY or premade carbon filter (haven't decided yet)

I've seen every configuration possible recommended, so it's hard to actually decide what works best. Anyone have any ideas?

None of the diagrams are correct. You should always pull smell through the filter IE Filter > Fan > light> exhaust out of cab> The arrows are air direction.

I agree never blow thru a filter unless u have to
The manager of the HTG I go to said it doesnt make any difference whether you pull or push through a filter. I am not sure where the rumor came from that you need to pull through a filter but that is just wrong. Either way you go you are still moving the same amount of air through the same amount of charcoal so why would it make any bit of difference?

What Ever. The guy is wrong. Why is there a pre filter on the outside of a carbon can ? It isn't to push dirty air through the back side of it after it goes through the carbon. Why would you blow dusty air into your lamp lense? Why would you have a bunch of hot air trapped between the light and the filter trying to get out ? Call it a rumor or what you may. Pulling through the filter is The correct way and makes HTG look like dumb asses,

What makes sense to me is that whether you push or pull you are still putting the same amount of air through the same amount of charcoal. Also the "kid" at the counter was a retired botany professor at UMASS and just from my limited time dealing with you I feel that I will go with his word over yours.

Dude what do you not understand about what a pre filter does. And No ! It does not move the same amount of air. If it pulls through the filter it is pulling in cool clean scrubbed air flowing more freely then hot stinky air trapped between the light and filter trying to get out. If your inline fan is smaller then your filter it makes it even worst because it can't push hard enough to get the air out. It's ashame that a Botany Proffeser, a failed one I presume who manages a hydro store has lead you wrong and your to hard headed to see why it's wrong and still give out wrong information. Do what you wish. Some people are un helpable.

Not only that it wares your filter out quciker pushing Hot air through it. Heat is the number one destroyer of carbon. Couple that with dust all in your carbon and you have a pile of shit. Maybe the desk clerk tells guys like you that so he can sell more carbon filters .

If it's a home made DYI filter I don't care which way you blow through it. I guarntee you if I spend 200.00 bucks on a 90# can, I'm gonna use it the right way.

Always pull air thru ur filter and thru a pre filter first if possible...the reason u pull thru a pre filter is to block dust and Stuff and shutting down the pore structure of carbon ....wich reduces smell
