i've never done it but i saw my buddies garden and he does that, no it doesn't have to be auto...how many you take depends on your plants structure. the lower the branch the better, take cuts that have 2 nodes at least.

yes you can go 12/12 from when you have roots on the clone, but it is much much better if you veg it for a few weeks first before 12/12.

putting it straight into 12/12 does not make it an autoflower. genetics make it an autoflower not the lighting schedule.

take as many clones as you can without killingthe plant, i know thats vague but its the basic idea.

Straight up good advice james!

An auto is a plant crossed with ruderalis, and is unlike a photo that is dependent on light timing, rather they have an internal "clock" that tells it when to bloom. You shouldn't try and take cuttings from an auto as the cuttings will bloom at the same time the mother will, they will always remain the same "age". Auto's can be grown their entire cycle under 18/6 (my suggestion) or even 24 hrs light. 12/12 is okay also but you wont get as good of yield.

Photo's can be put under 12/12 as long as they have roots, the longer you veg a plant the larger it gets...12/12 is good if you are dealing with a tight space and don't want the plants large. James has given you great advice on when/where to take a cutting from!

Happy gardening!

if you want more yield you should veg longer, under 18/6 light/dark, get the plant bigger (maybe a foot to 18 inches tall) then switch to 12/12 and you will be much happier with your end yield

Just a thought that occurred to me, is the mother already flowering? If so any clones you take from her will also be in flowering stage. Perhaps I read your original post wrong, but just sounded to me like the mother is already flowering.

You should always take clones from a vegging plant if you are going to veg for longer periods. If not already flowering, carry on and ignore my post.
