hey so just like the title says, plants stretch like a mother when the lights are too far away...but when the lights are close? like lets say im putting a 400w hps bulb 2 feet above my plant, will that allow the plant to grow like a mother seeing as it wont need to stretch to get more light ?

Just get the light as close as you can without burning your plants. Use your hand to check for heat. The plants are going to grow into the light regardless, but finding the sweet spot for your light will reduce stretching. You will always have to adjust the height of the light to accommodate growth. If vertical clearance is a problem, consider bending or LST.
