purple growing tips

Aloha.
My friend has this problem with his outdoor plants.
The new growing tips are turning a purplish color, and the leaves kinda taco like a Venus fly trap.
Any ideas?

Hello, Has it been hot there ? I see the deep veins usually because the plant is trying to dissipate heat The Purple could just be genetics. salt issues can cause curling too but it really don't look like that, but don't exclude that, to many nutrients can cause lockout and then salt build up starts

Best of luck :)

Light and heat stress, for sure.
Light burn can cause anthocyanin production in leaves, which is purple. Purple from deficiencies usually shows up in the stems, not leaves. Purple stems can also be perfectly normal for some cultivars.

Taco shaped leaves is usually heat stress.

Get some shade for those girls! Aloha!

That is known as the black death. It is contagious and mysterious...no one has ever been able to diagnose it on any forum. It is absolutely not caused by light, temperatures or nutrients. Best guess so far is phytoplasma infection spread by insect like thrips or aphids. Infected plants usually wilt and die in flower. Isolate it away from any precious clones.

If it were me I'd try a systemic fungicide. I'd also start feeding Aloe Vera powder which is new to me but seems to have really helped with a PM issue. It's supposed to boost immunity.

Glad to have ran across this. I too have had bad issues this year in my guerilla grow with purple tips/leaves on the new growth. Mine was worse in June and July and seem to be coming out of it. I started raising my phosphorus and cutting back on the K. I have noticed when I overuse seaweed and kelp products I get this symptom and have learned that too much blocks out the uptake of phosphorus.

I'm also a little stuck on it quiet possibly being a disease as well, and I have never had an issue with it until this current year/season.

I am fixing to hit mine with a fungicide called FLINT by Bayer. Purchased it last year to use against budrot and it worked. Stops it in its tracks and has a low toxicity level, have never in 17 years had a product work so well for botrytis. Its quiet expensive as I gave over 200 bucks for a very small container of it but it was worth a thousand dollars or more in the end and a little goes a hell of a long way. I need to be starting it soon anyway to keep down chances of a disease outbreak starting, as prevention.

Lets keep each other updated with this, seems like a serious issue that we need to be taking notes on and experimenting with. The affected growth I notice is stunted as well. I know with low P levels or deficiency comes with red/purple stems as well which mine are also exhibiting. It is also more on one particular strain (1969 Uncle Festers Skunk#18 ) than it is on others.

Do you have any pics of what you are experiencing with your plants? The "Black Death" is not just a purpling of the new growth but also a distortion of the leaves especially on the serrations of the leaves like you can see in the picture above. So far I havent really heard of anyone outside of Hawaii with this problem.

@rikdabrick has dealt with the same issue as well and started a thread on it a few months back, and there is also a thread on ICmag called "help identify black death in Hawaii". It is 100% not CAUSED by a nutrient issue but affecting nutrient uptake might be a symptom of the issue.

@kona gold I've had the same thing. And after a lot of research I'm about 100% positive it's from a phytoplasma infection. It's a bacterial infection and there's no cure for it. All of my plants that were outdoors got it. It's spread by bugs that have bitten infected plants. All of my plants got it on the last round and all of my plants have it this round. Fortunately I was still able to harvest plenty of flowers, but some strains don't handle it as well as others and a lot of the inner and lower budsites just rot and die. Most of the colas did fine for me still though, but there's been other growers that have said it just ended up killing their plants part way through flower. Apparently full sun helps stave it off and that's why the colas did fine for me. My soil is really dialed in too so maybe that's why I was still able to pull off a decent harvest.

Like @waterproof808 said, if you have plants that haven't gotten it yet then keep them away from the infected plants because there's no cure. I lost more than half of my keeper plants because of it. I've known a few other guys whose plants also got it and all of them said they had to get rid of all the infected plants and start over to get rid of it.

This is what the start of the Black Death looks like over here in Hawaii. It causes some weird leaf deformations and dark purple splotches on the leaves too.

Hmmm...I just snipped 6 tops off three different plants yesterday due to blacking on new growth. I had no idea what it was but thought maybe a P deficiency or possible fungus, although it doesn’t rub off. Hoping it’s just a Phosphorus def....
Your pics dont show the mutated leaf serrations so it could be something else. If you start seeing new fan leaves with abnormal serrations, then youll know for sure. Could just be your genetics or another issue.

Was thinking genetics but same issue on two different strains. Time will tell...

Here is a few pictures I got of my issue.

The last two is on a plant that is having really bad issues, trying to correct it now. But over all my plants are huge and some even looking like they will produce 2 to 3 lbs are showing the purpling symptoms on lower leaves. The one in the first Pic is covered in purple.

Here are some plants that are around the plants that are exhibiting purpling symptoms.

I would like to note that the other day I gave them a good foliar spray mixture of high phosphorous bloom nutes and half a dose of true blooms. This really kicked them into new growth shoots and seems to be what they needed, the extra P. However, along with that I got a few yellowing leaves do to the application of a high dose of P in pre-flower.

So my next feeding I will up the nitrogen again and cut back on the K for a bit as I am pretty sure the K has been causing a P lockout.

I see that in one of those pics the growth protruding out of the purple tip is also kinda deformed. It is still possible its a P deficiency as it can cause stunted and deformed new growth as well. We shall see how this all turns out.
