Psilocybin and Methane Gas

So I was learning about fungi in one of my science classes yesterday and the teacher went into talking about magic mushrooms, she told me that the psilocybin in the mushrooms is produced from the methane in the cow dung? Is this true or just an attempt to ward kids away from drugs? I was wondering if that is true than how can other species of mushrooms grow on other substrates that don't contain feces? An how can psilocybe cubensis grow on brown rice flour and vermiculite do one of those substrates contain methane?

No... she must be misinformed, certain species narutally contain psilocybin... And they don't all grown on cow dung. Cow dung just makes a perfect environment for cubensis to fruit. It will grow fine on many substates and doesn't require dung at all to make psilocybin.

I'd ask her to describe the metabolic process in which this methane is absorbed.

That's true. Very very true.

The only reason I thought it could have been true was because of jenkem, where you put human feces and urine in a jar and allow it to ferment. Then inhaling the fumes from it causes a hallucinogenic rush which is produced from the methane in it... if I'm not mistaken, I'm not to knowledgeable on the subject of inhaling poo...

I remember reading snopes, apparently the only known source of the whole "jenkem' thing is some reporter talking about kids that literally live in landfills. Apparently they were getting high off human sewage and thats the first report of it. NOWHERE else has it been documented though...

It says a lot of it being an urban legend on the net as in no one has ever really tried it here in the US but is there any proof methane can produce any type of psychoactive state? I just watched the FOX news report on it, and FOX said it so it must be true (sarcasm)! Butthash I'm sorry I even made this thread now

Dung is only a nutritional substrate and a delivery media (creature eats grass w/ spores, poops and shrooms grow from said poo). It has no influence over the production of psilocybine, psilocin or baeocystin (that we currently know of).

According to Stamets there does appear to be a correlation between certain grasses/sedges and the potency of psilocybes (think semilanceata, azurescens..etc). Funny enough those grasses/sedges contain another potent psychoactive ingredient. Curiouser and Curiouser.

The whole 'jenkem' thing made me laugh for weeks when I first read about it a couple years ago.

Don't worry, as I said before it's only really DOCUMENTED that kids in the poorest countries do it..

That shit is not mainstream, it's a BIG joke. It was started by some guy, faked by a few others and then a parent heard about it, told LEO and it just perpetuated from there I think.

I knew kids that would buy a few cents worth of gas just to get a light buzz and a bad headache but human shit, damn, I wouldn't even mention that to anyone, lol.
